Piano Concerto No. 3 (Rautavaara)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Einojuhani Rautavaara wrote his Piano Concerto No. 3 (subtitled Gift of Dreams) in 1998, nine years since the last one. It is dedicated to Vladimir Ashkenazy, who premiered the concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic in 1999. The eminent pianist has since toured around the world playing the concerto, subsequently recording it on Ondine, a Finnish record company. The work is in three movements, with a poignant central adagio. The work adopts tonal harmonies, as in his Piano Concerto No. 1, but the overall mood is much more calm and serene.
