I have reworded and expanded on this article. I believe it is considerably less technical than it was before. I have also noted the importance of photonic circuits, categorized the article, and provided some "see also" links. I'm working now to add my resources.

This article need some serious work. There are may statements which vague or would not be generally held to be true. While it needs not to be overly technical the simplification must not create inaccuracy. Since it is currently being edited I get to it later and clean it up. Dtneilson 02:17, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
