I'm hoping to expand this article over he following weeks. If you would like to help, the best place to start would be researching the initial phase of photosynthesis, in which a pigment absorbs a photon raising the electron energy level and causing it to transfer an electron to a neighboring electron acceptor.

"If a photon of light hits the atom it will be absorbed if, and only if, energy of that photon is equal to the difference between the ground state and another energy level in that atom.
