[edit] History
The station originated from an idea some people had in a forum they used to frequent, and it merely started as a game between friends.
At first the radio was part of the forum it originated in, but since it had grown in audience and DJs it later moved to another webpage gaining its independence and becoming Phoenix Radio. Its first show aired on December 18, 2005.
It now continues to air 24/7 with the majority of its timeslots having live shows with Greek DJs around the world, since every producer is able to transmit the show live from his/her house. It currently broadcasts using the Icecast protocol in stream encoding.
[edit] Choice of name
One of the founders of this internet radio station already had a station of his own with the same name in the late 60s.
Radio Phoenix (“Ράδιο-Φοίνικας”, Radio Phinikas) was a small local pirate radio station in Athens, Greece during the Regime of the Colonels (the military dictatorship that took place in the country from 1967 to 1974). In a period like that things were strict on liberty of speech and such, and especially since the Phoenix bird is also a recognised symbol of dictatorship and thus also a symbol of the Greek junta the latter quickly dismantled it.
The years passed and the founder of the pre-mentioned radio found out that some people started an internet radio station in a forum. He contacted them and offered some help. When he told the story about his personal experiences with the station the founders of the new one accepted to the idea that the new-born station should have the same name, just like the mythological Phoenix regenerates from its ashes.
[edit] Streams
Phoenix Radio currently offers its listeners two streams to choose from:
- Phoenix Radio Classic - Station 1 (simply called Phoenix 1) which offers a wide arrange of Greek and International music hits of all musical genres.
- Phoenix Radio AC & EDM - Station 2 (Phoenix 2) that concentrates on Adult contemporary music (AC), which in simple words means it broadcasts all-time hits excluding hip-hop, teen pop and hard rock. The EDM denotes the fact that the stream also has an EDM Zone timeslot that plays Electronic dance music sets by upcoming Greek DJs.
