[edit] Goals and background
Linking Music and Geography
Firstly a simple goal, to tag every piece of music with a place name in the title (including songs, albums and bands) with {{Music_With_Place_Name_Navbox}} which automatically categorizes the article into: Category:Music > Category:Music with Place Name in Title then one of these three subcategories:
- Songs with Place Name in Title
- Albums with Place Name in Title
- Bands with Place Name in Title
Next to move onto tagging all music with geographical data, for example:
- Where bands come from
- Where bands/tours have performed
- Where music was composed
- It has been suggested that the categories contribute to overcategorization, a list was suggested. However:
- A list would have to be done manually (unless some one makes a bot, I haven't a clue how!)
- The variafiability has already been contested because of What_wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_directory however, I believe that a list like this would prove useful to some readers
[edit] Scope
- This Project covers all music related articles
- The project covers all articles about bands, artists and songs containing place names, real or fictional
- To expand too cover more subcategories, (?by expanding the template)

[edit] Current tasks
- Bug! (Oh no!): some articles are categorised under Category:Song with Place Name in Title and some are under Category:Songs with Place Name in Title it could just be that wikipedia hasn't recategorized them yet after I changed the template
Bug! (Oh no!): for some reason User:Philipbembridge/Sandbox is categorised as well!Fixed!- Identify articles needing tagging (by googling etc.) and list them below:
- List of bands named after places I have got down to Alcatrazz PhilB ~ T/C 14:06, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
Remove bug which lead to incorrect page location for the Place variableDone, Note the "Place" variable is Case Sensitive now
[edit] Suggested tasks
Place tasks that you think might benefit the project below:
- Lists on the internet (& wikipedia) of music with place names:
- Develop template for use with songs about places which don't mention the place in the title
- Develop functionality for multiple place names in the same song for example:
- From New York to LA by Patsy Gallant
- From Paris to Berlin by Infernal (band)
- Develop a way of including songs which sound like place names for example Californication by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers
- and maybe for songs (etc.) which insinuate places like Down Under (song) by the Men at Work
- add functionality for places which have a different wikipedia page to the name of the place e.g. Aberfeldy, Scotland
- Clean up categorization! (look at this messy catagory!)
- Suggested categary: Music By Location, with subcategories for things like these:
- Maybe add location data to these: Category:Music events
- Consider a template for these: Category:Songs by country
