This needs some updating; in 1911 none of Colomb's ideas had been tested in battle; the modern view is that World War I found them wanting (cf The Rules of the Game: Jutland and British Naval Command by Andrew Gordon). There ought to be something here about his correspondence on the VictoriaCamperdown collision, in which he took the absurd view it was more important for the captain to obey orders than to save his ship.
