[edit] Breakout Fan Favorites section?
I don't know that this section is notable enough to consider having its own article (actually, its own list). However, I also don't think that having it so prominent and large on the page is good. It doesn't mesh with MOS because it's a list on the main page of the article, and I suppose that's partially my fault, but the section was a mess written out as prose. It's much neater now, but I think that it would definitely help to have it be in a list format. Input needed from anyone, please! KV5 (talk) 17:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- My opinion is, & has been, that it should be striken from the main page. Noting that I am 99% sure that it would not pass AFD, if nominated, as a separate page. Most of these are not verifiable, at least not from legitimate sources, let alone notable. So whether prose or list it doesn't matter, without citations it reads like non-encyclopedic crap (bluntly)-- My $0.02 (though maybe not what you were looking for). - Mitico (talk) 18:03, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- I wasn't looking for anything specific, I just wanted some input. I didn't know exactly what the best course of action was anyway, and I share your opinion about not passing AFD. The problem is that verifiability is hard to come by for these, at least in terms of sourcing, because they are mostly visual on TV, and there's no way to cite that on Wikipedia. Anyone else? - Obviously it wasn't that big of a deal, because there was no comment when I removed it. KV5 • Squawk box • Fight on! 21:51, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Celebrity fans?
Is this necessary? Will it stick around if we are going for GA status (an ultimate goal of WP:PHILLIES)? Ideas, thoughts, queries, etc.? KV5 • Squawk box • Fight on! 12:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- It's already tagged for needing citations, so it would likely get rubbed out, as being a "random collection of information". Someone had put the mayor on the list, for heaven's sake. Come on. Unless a celebrity makes a point of being a fan of a team (Jack Nicholson and the Los Angeles Lakers would be a good example) such a list would have to be canned. - I would tend to agree, and I'd say it's one of the few things missing from getting this article close to B-class. KV5 • Squawk box • Fight on! 13:26, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- And back to the original question, I would say the section is not "necessary" at all, but if a few of the more obvious celebrities could verifiably be determined to be close followers of the Phillies, it could be worth mentioning. Just because someone is from Philly and says they're a fan, doesn't really mean anything. If they go to lots of games, or did when they were a kid and still try to go when they can, that might be worth mentioning. Use Nicholson as the standard. Another example would be Billy Crystal, who not only rooted for the Yankees as a kid, but produced the film about the home run chase in 1961. That's a true celebrity fan of a team. - Crystal also played for the Yankees during Spring Training this year... KV5 • Squawk box • Fight on! 14:05, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Right, although I even wonder how much is fandom and how much is calculated personal career furtherance. One of his pals called him the DH ("Designated Hebrew") which is funny. He struck out, but he's like 60 years old. We should do so well. But I see various names in the list who are Philly natives, like Bill Cosby, and wonder if they are true fans or if they merely like to have their names associated with the team. That's not a knock on Cosby as such, it's just a name I recall from the list. There was also Tim McGraw, son of famous Phils reliever Tug McGraw. To what extent is he a true fan, I wonder?
