[edit] U.S. County

Wondering how to edit this U.S. County Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Counties standards might help.

[edit] "Philadelphius"?

Perhaps in Latin, but in Greek it is "Philadelphia", and as the New Testament was written in Greek, and this is what is alluded to in the county's name, I question the appropriateness of this comment. Rlquall 01:10, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Merge?

Why not merge with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania? It seems to be standard Wikipedia practice to have only a single article for conterminous zones. That is, San Francisco County, California redirects to San Francisco, California; Nantucket County, Massachusetts redirects to Nantucket, Massachusetts; Kings County, New York redirects to Brooklyn. Why should Philadelphia be different? AJD 18:33, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well thats a poor reason for a merger, so if everone else jumped off a bridge would you? If anything, their should be more added to this page.--Boothy443 | comhrÚ 05:50, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't follow your reasoning. Philadelphia and Philadelphia County are different names for the same thing; one thing shouldn't have two different articles about it. AJD 14:46, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I agree, merge it. I live in Philly and we never, and I have never heard it called the County of Philadelphia.--Tombombadil 3 July 2005 15:33 (UTC) merge, but boothy443 may just revert.

Philadelphia County isn't used in the vernacular, but that's hardly a reason to argue that it doesn't exist. Philadelphia still has a County Sheriff. Michæl 10:04, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

:I also think that this information should be merged in the city of Philadelphia information but specific mention should be made that the county and city of Philadelphia are one in the same. I lived in Philly for about 2 years and the distinction was never useful. Reflex Reaction 21:46, 25 July 2005 (UTC) Reading the comments and the articles in depth have changed my mind. The histories are separate and the articles should remain separate. It also looks like Boothy443 is doing lots of work to validate two articles. I count at least 2 people for the merge (Tombombadil and AJD) with at least 4 against the merge (Moreau36, Boothy, Mrja84, and myself). There has been plenty of time to garner support for the merge and I will remove the proposed merge template Reflex Reaction 14:31, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Although the city and county are co-existive today, that wasn't always the case, especially before the merger in 1854. The reason I think the page sh0uld not merge is because of the difference in the history side of things, when Philadelphia County had other incorporated districts and towns.-- Moreau36 23 September 2005, 0841 (EDT)
Chiming in to agree with Moreau36. History prior to 1854 justifies separate articles. --CComMack 01:22, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
I agree with Moreau36. I have only lived in Philadelphia until I was 5, but have visited every year since family is there. I find it very useful as far as history is concern to have two different articles one for the county and one for the city. It helps add a bit more knowledge to Wiki and those that read it.

[edit] Wiki Lisiting

On this wiki page, Consolidated city-county,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_city-county

Philadelphia is listed. As such I am once again removing the county link. evrik 19:05, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

I requested mediation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal#Philadelphia_County_and_other_Philadelphia_Pages

[edit] The city and county articles are technically different (see history sections)

The reason for a non-merger is, like I mentioned in my earlier comment, there are "two" histories between the city and county, especially before the Consolidation Act of 1854. Prior to 1854, there were other incorporated cities, districts, and townships that should be noted. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the article about the city only, especially in it's history section. If I'm not mistaken, the county came into existance before the city. --Moreau36; 0146, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Page protection

Until I added the protection tag to this page, there was little or no discussion regarding the reversions between November 2nd and January 15th on this talk page. I hope protecting the page will encourage some positive dialogue here, so for the time being, I am going to leave this page protected. I am unfamiliar with Pennsylvania related topics, so please discuss amoungst yourselves what is the best for this article. If the page still remains protected when consensus occurs, please let me know, and I will promptly unprotect the page. Provided that the repeated reversions stop, I'll also unprotect the page earlier so that other users can edit the article. -- HappyCamper 06:22, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Hmm...well, still no discussion on this page, but at least there is some improvement. The revert warring happened 3 days after protection was lifted, but I think can be much better. --HappyCamper 12:15, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, I get a very odd error from the software, so --protection. It would be really nice for the article if we all stopped the reversions. --HappyCamper 12:29, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article versus category

Now that the page has been frozen.

Let the Philadelphia County article exist. The category shouldn't be separtate from the current 'city' one. For all the reasons mentioned before.evrik 06:13, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Frozen

Why was this frozen?68.174.86.238 01:50, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

I guess no one had an answer for you. South Philly 01:39, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] County Seat

I have removed the sentence pointing out that the city is the county seat of the county... because it's a silly thing to say, really, given that there isn't anything else in the county. :) Savatar 04:34, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah and it is just as silly to remove it considering that the city is still the seat for the county. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:39, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
Er, um, ...yes. Should we also point out that the city has the largest population out of all localities in the county? :) Savatar 05:04, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copy-edit request

I'll go through the page later today for copy-editing. --Happylobster 14:09, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm gathering that the reason for the copy-edit flag is the opening paragraph with strong Christian overtones. I'm toning it down, but don't want to piss on a hornet's nest. Let me know if I'm out of line. --Happylobster 14:41, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I moved the Christian language out of the intro and into the history. I think the Christian history is important, but the paragraph probably needs to be better edited. --evrik 14:51, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
I moved it up one paragraph up in the section and then made revisions. Hopefully this is sufficient.--Happylobster 15:11, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
