Phillipsburg High School is a comprehensive, four-year public high school located in Phillipsburg, in Warren County, New Jersey, United States. This school is located in the eastern part of the Lehigh Valley, at the Pennsylvania border. For this reason, the school's nickname is the "Stateliners."

The school is part of the Phillipsburg School District, an Abbott District that serves students from the town of Phillipsburg and from five area communities: Alpha, Bloomsbury (in Hunterdon County), Greenwich Township, Lopatcong Township and Pohatcong Township, who attend as part of sending/receiving relationships.[2]

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,720 students and 136.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 12.6.[1]

[edit] Student population

Phillipsburg High School serves about 1,600 students, in excess of the school's capacity. To compensate for this, the Phillipsburg School District either owns or leases 31 trailers. A plan for a new high school has been in the works for some time, but the current proposal has stalled due to lack of funds. Local parents have organized efforts to advocate on behalf of a new high school building.[3]

[edit] Athletics

Phillipsburg High School has an athletic rivalry with neighboring Easton, Pennsylvania's Easton Area High School. The two teams play an annual football game on Thanksgiving that is one of the oldest rivalries in American high school football.[4] The game, which typically draws some 10,000 fans, was broadcast nationally on ESPN in 1988. The rivalry, as always, was played on Lafayette College's Fisher Field in Easton. The 100th meeting between the two schools, which Easton won 21-7, was broadcast nationally on ESPN2 on Thanksgiving Day 2006.[5]

As of 2005, the football team's 581 wins over its 100-year-plus history were the most wins by any football team in New Jersey history.[6] As of the 2007 season, the Stateliner football program reached another landmark of 600 wins with a win over Hillsborough High School.[citation needed]

The wrestling team won the 2007 North II, Group IV state sectional championship with a 34-25 win against Bridgewater-Raritan High School.[7]

In 2005, the school's Cross Country team placed 1st in the NJ Group IV Championship Race held in Holmdel Township, New Jersey, and placed 3rd in the NJ Meet of Champions race, also held in Holmdel. In 2007, Doug Jankowski, a senior at the time, was recognized as runner of the year by the Express Times.[citation needed]
