[edit] Profile of the Campus

The PSHS Bicol Region Campus is situated at a six-hectare lot in Barangay Tagontong, Goa, Camarines Sur. It primarily accepts students coming from the provinces belonging to the Bicol Region: Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon. It also serves the cities of Naga, Iriga, Legazpi, Ligao, Tabaco, Sorsogon, and Masbate.

The campus presently is still being developed. It currently has 274 scholars.

[edit] History

The signing of Republic Act 8304 in 1996 as amended by Republic Act 8619 in 1998 made official the conversion of San Rafael National High School at Tigaon, Camarines Sur under the Department of Education Culture and Sports (now the Department of Education) into the Philippine Science High School - Camarines Sur Campus (the school's original name) under the Philippine Science High School System and the Department of Science and Technology. The campus was originally located at San Rafael, Tigaon, Camarines Sur, and it started operations in July 1998, with an initial enrolment of 29 scholars.

However, due to numerous problems involving the conversion, the Philippine Congress passed another law restoring the SRNHS while allowing the campus, now called the PSHS Bicol Campus, to exist. After School Year 1999-2000, the school, with Dr Gregilda Pan as its first campus director, then moved to the neighboring town of Goa, where it temporarily stayed at the Partido State University campus from 2000 to 2002.

In 2002, the school, now using its present name, finally moved to its permanent site, a six-hectare lot donated by the Goa municipal government, at Barangay Tagontong, Goa.

[edit] Admissions and Academics

[edit] Admissions

Admission to the Campus is based on the PSHS System National Competitive Examination (PSHS-NCE). It is a two-step screening given to all qualified elementary students. To be eligible for admission, applicants must be Filipino students who must belong to the top 10% of the graduating class or must have special aptitude in science and math.

The first screening is the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). It consists of tests in Verbal, Abstract Reasoning and Mathematics. The second screening is the Science Math Aptitude Test (SMAT). It consists of tests in Science and Mathematics. Examinations are held during the first part of the school year.

The campus accepts a maximum of 90 freshmen scholars annually. It also accepts transferees in the sophomore year, also through a screening process.

[edit] Academics

The campus follows the curriculum prescribed by the PSHS System. Students experience a common freshman year, with a demanding English and Mathematics curriculum, and exposure to Earth Science and Technology Preparation. The students then go through a process that allows them to follow either a science stream or a technology stream.

The streaming courses are given through electives in the second through fourth year. The core courses are taken by all students. To learn more, please go to the Philippine Science High School System page.
