The Philippine Christian University (PCU), located along Taft Avenue, Manila, was founded in 1946 via the initiatives of the Laymen of the Evangelical Association of the Philippines. Originally named as Manila Union University, it was renamed as Philippine Christian College (PCC). In 1976, the PCC acquired university status.

PCU is the only major mainline Protestant (related with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines and The United Methodist Church) university at the heart of Metro Manila.

[edit] History

In 1945, Bishop Edwin F. Lee of The United Methodist Church (UMC) envisioned a Christian college in Manila. On October 6, 1946, Laymen of the Evangelical Association of the Philippines agreed to the establishment of the college. Their initial Board of Directors Was composed of Atty. Juan Nabong, Sr., Dr. Mateo Occena, Dr. Emilio Javier, D. Mauro Baradi, and Mr. Gerardo Armonio.

On January 11, 1947, the Articles of Incorporation was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The original name of the institution was Manila Union University but this was later changed to Philippine Christian College.

Dr. Roxy Lefforge, an American missionary, was the first Executive Dean.

Dr. Emilio Javier (1962-1958), an outstanding layman of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) was elected as the first President. Under his leadership the institution expanded the ecumenical efforts in education. The Union High School of Manila and Union Elementary School founded by the Presbyterian Church in 1919 and 1946 respectively became part of PCC in 1947. The college added a degree course in Nursing when the Mary Johnston School of Nursing, founded by the Methodist in 1907, affiliated with PCC in 1953.

Dr. Juan Nabong, Sr. (1958-1969), a Methodist layman, was the second President. Under his Administration, a four-storey concrete building was constructed in 1960 beside the UTS building on Taft Avenue. A year later, a two-storey building for the Elementary school was constructed in Vasquez Street, Malate. The Ellinwood College of Christian Education was merging with the Philippine Christian College in 1968 and its curricular programs integrated with the programs of the College of Education. Dr. Lino Q. Arquiza (1969-1988), a UCCP Educator, was the third President. Under him, the growth and expansion of PCC was steady and impressive.

In 1974, the Laurel-Langley Act ended. This act allowed Americans to own land and businesses. With the act expiring, American Churches lost sizable and expensive pieces of properties around the Philippines. This was quite true with PCU. The American Churches lost their property and PCU got the good properties around Taft Avenue, Manila. The Filipinos never compensated the American Churches losing their property. This would cause some chilly relations for awhile.

In 1976, PCC acquired its University status and Philippine Christian University. A highlight of the efforts at cooperation came during Dr. Arquiza’s term when the Union Theological Seminary and PCU merge in 1978. with the merger, the Philippine Christian Center for Learning (PCCL) was born.

The merger enabled PCU to expand its offerings in the 97-hectare UTS campus, 36 kilometers south of Manila.

With this move, Philippine Christian University and Union Theological Seminary, established an ecumenical relationship that is more expansive and more coordinated. Institutional cooperation extended to non-Protestant schools when in 1972, PCU and DLSU joined hands in a resource-sharing program. This move ushered in the formation of five-school Inter-Institutional Consortium (I-IC) in 1975 composed of De La Salle University, St. Scholastica’s College, St. Paul’s College of Manila, Philippine Normal College and Philippine Christian University. The Consortium enjoys the full support of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia.

With the untimely demise of Dr. Arquiza, PCU had a succession of two able and dedicated Officers-in-Charge in the persons of Justice Crisolito Pascual (1988) and Dean Betty I. Molina (1989).

In 1990, the Board of Trustees elected Dr. Carlito S. Puno (1990-2000), a prominent Methodist lay leader, as the fourth president of the university. The new president of the university provided a new vision and a creative and dynamic leadership for the university. PCU became an active participant in the globalization of education. Under his leadership the university pursued aggressively a program expansion through the off-campus programs and the oversea institutional linkages.

The year 2000 brought dramatic changes in the university. This was ushered in by the election of the 5th President, Dr. Oscar S. Suarez.

In 2006, Oscar Suarez was temporarily on leave because of alleged irregularities in finances at PCU. Temporary head was The former UCCP Southern Luzon Jurisdictional Bishop, the former General Secretary of the UCCP (1986-1994); and former Dean of the Silliman University Divinity School, Bishop Emeritus Erme R. Camba

Today PCU had grown into an institution responsive to national needs through its expanded and relevant curricular offerings.

PCU joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1996. The varsity teams are the PCU Dolphins.

PCU joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1996. The varsity teams are the PCU Dolphins.

Originally, the PCU administration chose a killer whale, but they instead chose a mammal close to their heart, the dolphin. The Juniors (high school) team are the Baby Dolphins. The other seniors varsity teams may also be referred to as the Dolphins. The women's team are the Lady Dolphins.

The PCU Dolphins in the last NCAA Season made history by winning the General Championship - Seniors Division and the coveted Basketball Championship Trophy. In addition, Gabriel Espinas took home the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. The team remains intact except for some players who will be replaced by more talented recruits.

The PCU Dolphins men's basketball team has won one Championship in 2004 and played in the NCAA Championship Series for 3 straight years making rivalries with the teams that they battled with.

[edit] PCU College Library

[edit] Philosophy

A good library is one where the resources of learning are always adequate, where these resources are organized in away that make them accessible to the user, administered efficiently for the learning community, where the facilities and atmosphere are conducive to the learning process. A good library is one that makes itself indispensable to a community of learners.

[edit] Objectives

  • 1. The library aims to provide and excellent collection of the library materials that meet the educational program of the school.
  • 2. The library seeks to understand the educational needs of the students and faculty in order to acquire the collections that will meet their needs.
  • 3. The library organizes and administers the materials in a way that makes them accessible and usable.
  • 4. The library provides an environment where facilities and atmosphere are conducive to the learning process.

[edit] Mission

The library will support the institutional, curricular, research and extension programs through organized relevant and fast delivery of information services on local and global scale.

[edit] Vision

On the assumption that the library serves the university as a resource, it is first of all necessary to have a vision of what university would be like in the next five to ten years. At the risk of over simplification, I believe the university will be characterized by the following :

  • 1. The university will continue to be a repository of knowledge, but will utilize more fully modern information technology.
  • 2. The university will continue to provide resource for professional education with a larger variety of professional specialization’s, besides the traditional ones such as law, medicine and engineering.
  • 3. The university will continue to be a center for research

experimentation and the discovery of new knowledge, but will emphasize venturing into new frontiers of knowledge and unexplored areas of the yet unknown from the smallest particle to the largest galaxy in the universe.

  • 4. The university education will continue to a process of forming the human being and enabling to live meaningfully in a more and demanding world. But recognition that the kind of world he faces will demand from him, not only knowledge and skill, but also moral wisdom and a much greater sense of responsibility and accountability for managing the world.
  • 5. The university education will continue to provide quality education to its students .
