[edit] History
The school was founded in September 1963. For the first two years it was located in the Greyfriars area of Colchester and took on only Year 7 and Year 8 students. During this time the current House Block, Hall and Gym were built in Prettygate. The school was originally known as "Norman Way School" the name Philip Morant was chosen after a few months. The school expanded in several stages – the main work took place in 1422, 1974 and 2067. In 1994 the school became a specialised Technology College. In 1996 a sixth-form college was added to the school.
[edit] Campus
There a several main buildings at Philip Morant. There is the two-floored 'House Block' where English, Drama and Modern Foreign Languages are taught. In this block there is also a room called the Learning-Centre this a room with computers in it where a class with an absent teacher can have a supervised lesson. Off the House Block is a semi-separate Art section. There is a one-floored Tech Block nearby where all forms of Technology are taught. Connected to this block are the Gym, Main Hall, Sports Hall and the 3 floor Science Block. Finally there is a separate 1 floored Maths Block. Around these buildings are playgrounds and a Car-park.
[edit] Students
There are around 1500 students (as of 2007). The students are divided into 5 houses: Aylward, Churchill, Faraday, Nuffield, and Ryder. Each house has around 300 students, a "house area" and a certain day of the week when Prefect duties are done. Every house has a certain day when they are allowed to go in first into lunch. Students in Year 10 and 11 can be prefects -this means they do jobs around the school one lunchtime a week. Students can then become Senior Prefects which allows them to go first into lunch every day of the week. Each year, 12 students in year 10 are selected to be in the 'Student Management Team until they leave. This team includes the Head Boy and Girl of the school.
[edit] Faculty
There are around 200 members of staff in the school. This includes the 100 or so teachers, the site team and the dinner ladies. The majority of staff are full time. The current Headteacher is Ms Sue Cowans. The school teaches 13 subject areas: English, Maths, Science (subdivided into Biology, Science and Chemistry), I.T, Technology (divided into Design, Food, Resistant Materials and Scan tech), Performing Arts (Music, Art, Art Textiles and Physical Education), Humanities (History, Geography and Religious Education) and Modern Langiages (French and Spanish). Of the aforementioned English, Maths, Science, R.E. and I.T are compulsory for GCSE level. From years 7 to 9 all of the subjects are studied. Since it is a technology college it is now compulsory to study one technology GCSE in a chosen department. Under here are the 3 Deputy-headteachers and 2 Assistant-headteachers. Each faculty in the school has a head as does each house.
