Phil Bates has been a part of many bands including Trickster, Quill and was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for ELO Part II from 1993 through to 1998. Born in Tamworth in 1953, Phil grew to love music from the age of 10 after having heard The Beatles for the first time after which he started to learn guitar.
At the age of 12 he joined his first band The Wild Four and many other bands soon followed: Teenbeats and Trickster to name but a few. He joined ELO Part II to replace Neil Lockwood and Pete Haycock, later leaving the band five years later to spend some more time with his family.
