[edit] Club career
[edit] Rotherham United
Barnes started his playing career with Rotherham United, making two appearances.
[edit] Blackpool
Barnes then moved to Blackpool in the 2000-01 season, as cover for Tony Caig but eventually made the position his own. A good shot-stopper with a safe pair of hands, he grew in confidence and contributed a number of clean sheets to the Bloomfield Road club's promotion campaign.
[edit] Sheffield United
At his own request, Barnes went on the transfer list at Blackpool in November 2003. He joined Sheffield United on a free transfer on July 2, 2004 but spent his time with the Blades mainly as cover for Paddy Kenny. A regular for the reserves, making just five first-team appearances, he also went out on loan spells at Torquay United and Queens Park Rangers.
[edit] Grimsby Town
On 29 June, 2006, Barnes signed a three-year contract with Grimsby Town for an undisclosed fee, to replace Steve Mildenhall after his transfer to Yeovil Town.
