Phelim (Felix) O'Neill
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phelim (Felix) O'Neill (ca 1660 – September 11, 1709), was the head of the Clanaboy O'Neill dynasty, whose family has been in Portugal since the 18th century. He was officially recognized by the offices of arms throughout Europe as titular Prince and Count of Clanaboy, but he refused to use this title, using instead the style O'Neill of Clannaboy.
He was the son of the previous Head of the House Ever O'Neill (ca 1625 – bef 1689), Chief of the House, by his marriage, paternal grandson of another Chief, Conn Boy O'Neill (ca 1590 – ca 1630), by his marriage to his cousin ... O'Neill (ca 1590 –), great-grandson of Chief Donal O'Neill (ca 1560 –) and wife, and great-great-grandson of Chief Murkertac O'Neill (ca 1530 –) and wife, who in turn was a younger brother of Donal O'Neill and Hugh O'Neill, Master of Feevagh, sons of Chief Murkertac O'Neill (ca 1500 – bef 1567) and wife Marguerite O'Byrne, and paternal grandsons of Brian Ballagh II, Prince of Clanaboy (ca 1470 –), by his first marriage to Sara (he married secondly to Sibila and was the father of Hugh O'Neill). Finally, he was the younger brother of High Boy III, Prince of Clanaboy (– 1524), and the older brother of Prince Nial Oge (– 1537) and Prince Felim Baccagh (– 1533), the children of Nial More, Roydamna of Ulster (ca 1440 –), and wife Ineen Dubh.
The Princes of Tyrone and Clanaboy were the ancestors of Phelim (Felix) O'Neill, Chief of the Lineage, who at the beginning of the 18th century got dispossessed of all the assets through the confiscation applied to the Catholics of Ireland, which lead him to emigrate to France. He died on September 11, 1709, at the Battle of Malplaquet, in Belgium, present-day France, where he entered as an Officer of the English Brigade.
