[edit] Being Indian is...

Wow, that is a really powerful piece of work. It is listening to your well-intentioned white brother try to tell you about your native spirituality. Ok, so now I'm going to actually do this, sort of though. First off, I'm not saying this is true, I am merely repeating something that was told to me by an anthropology of religion teacher (Hank Wesselman). This could be wrong--he actually says to not go repeating this to many Natives because they often get upset, but I just wanted to hear what you have to say about it. According to him, the idea of the Great Spirit was not a part of any of the diverse Native American spiritual traditions until Christian Missionaries tried to convert Natives to monotheism (he also echoed one of the statements on your list by saying that monotheism really doesn't exist, it's just polytheism with a highly centralized figure ruling over the other lower dieties). Even if this is true, you should be free to follow whatever path fullfils you most, I just wanted your opinion on that idea. Oh, there's a really good punk band called MDC that is famous for their song "John Wayne Was a Nazi" [1]. One thing I was wondering about was the true meaning of Thanksgiving, because I can think of several things that could be. What was your intention in that one? I definitely share your sentiments regarding Columbus. I printed up some flyers to put up at my school a couple years back on Columbus day, but when I got to school I realized I misspelled a word and I never put them up. I should probably do that again sometime. This last year for Columbus Day I wrote an argumentative essay on why Columbus Day shouldn't be honored for my College Comp class (the essay had to be on something current in the mainstream news media, so I used articles on the protests in Denver to justify my writing about it). My teacher is using it as an example this semester for other students, which made me happy, since I get to not only feel good about my writing but know that my political ideas are getting spread around to others. I was also thinking of trying to organize an alternative Thanksgiving type of thing some year, complete with a tofurkey dinner (because you have to enjoy yourself) and some form of public protest, not sure what though. Any ideas? The Ungovernable Force 06:37, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Being Native American in the XXI Century is...

...challenging, from what I can see :) May I ask about the "living on borrowed time after your 44th birthday" line? Please don't tell me that's the life expectancy in the 21st century for a Native American?! --kingboyk 10:11, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

That's what I'd guess, based on the poverty of Native Americans. If I remember correctly they are the most economically disadvandaged racial/ethnic group in America (then again, to lump all Natives as one race or ethnic group probably isn't that correct, just like lumping all people from Latin America together isn't very smart, but that's the most convenient thing I can think of in my current sleep deprived state--3:16 am my time, I really need to stop staying up so late on wikipedia). Hi. I'm just letting you know that I have removed Katefan0 from the Esperanza alerts because she will not be returning for personal reasons and did not leave because of community pressures. I've commented. I am not sure I support the award itself but I can't think of any wikipedian more angelic than our dear Phaedriel! ++Lar: t/c 20:53, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
My thoughts were in line with Lar's. Sharon is certainly deserving of the award, but I'm uneasy at the process. I'd prefer it if we could send her a big bunch of flowers instead :) Failing that - impractical for obvious reasons - let's just say you're really valued around here Phaedriel and you make this is a brighter, happier place! --kingboyk 21:53, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tone's RfA thanks

Dear Phaedriel/Archive 11 — Thank you for your support on my recent RfA. It succeeded with a final tally of 46/2/3 so now I am an administrator. I'll be taking things slowly at first and getting used to the new tools, but please let me know if there's any anything I can help you with in the future. And please correct me, if you spot I make a mistake. Thank you again. --Tone 23:57, 26 May 2006 (UTC))

Hi, Phaedriel. I don't know if you happened to notice that my "delete" argument on Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Civility noticeboard was by way of being a reply to your "keep" (immediately above), or whether you'd like to respond to it? Best, Bishonen | talk 10:35, 28 May 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Hey

Hey =) I've been going through the same inner debate: I have so much going on in my life, and I'm not sure I have enough time for Wikipedia. I'm sure I'll be coming back to it though, but you never know :) We all love you! — Deckiller 13:28, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you for your nomination and comments in Lar's RfA!

We are here to build an encyclopedia!

Hi Phaedriel, and thank you for your nomination and thoughtful comments in my request for adminship! With a final tally of (109/5/1), I have been entrusted with adminship. It's been several weeks since the conclusion of the process, so hopefully you've had a chance to see me in action. Please let me know what you think! Thanks again! ++Lar: t/c 03:25, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Ditto to that. I don't blame you, since I haven't stuck my neck out as much as you have, but it is awful that Brandt is going to win. Best of luck to you regardless of your decision. --rogerd 20:27, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ya know...

Let this be the reminder..
Let this be the reminder..

Ya know, I wise person once told me:

"I know the old saying is if you love somebody, set them free, but it is in my nature to always fight to keep what I love."

Well, I came back today to say the same to you. Wikipedia needs people like you, its what makes this place a so much happier enviorment. Although it may not seem like it right now, everyone would be devestated if you decided to leave the project. Please reconsider your descision to leave altogether. If you decide to leave, I truly support your choice and will defend it to the best of my ability. There are a lot of nasty people on Wikipedia. The best thing we can do is to either try to encourage them to be nicer or ignore them altogther. I prefer the latter ;-) And this is coming from someone who was tormented since December, had his page vandalized, was wiki-stalked and ultimately left because he took things to harshly. I would hate for anything like that to happen to you..

Take care Sharon and keep in touch with me -- Moe ε 18:37, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I concur with what Moe said. It would be awful to lose a great contributor *and* person like you due to some misfit's antics. It's your decision, of course, and I can see it's not an easy one. Either way, please stay in contact; you know how to e-mail me. =] Take care, —Nightstallion (?) 10:09, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

I want to echo what Moe and Nighstallion have said - you would be sorely missed here if you were to leave. I'm sorry that someone's comments have made you think about leaving - they have no right to do that. You are a fabulous editor and an even more fabulous person. -- Natalya 23:32, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blnguyen's RfA

Hello Sharon. Thank you for your wiki-loving support and pre-encouragement at request for adminship which ended at the overwhelming and flattering result of (160/1/0), and leaves me in a position of having to live up to a high standard of community expectation. If you need any admin assistance, feel free to ask me, and naturally, if I make any procedural mistakes, feel free to point them out and I look forward to working with you in the future, and wish you personal strength and courage in this difficult time. Can I bribe you back with a new Ford Mustang?

Don't leave Wikipedia Phaedriel just because someone was acting ass towards you. If I would have don it, I would have left when Orphan1 dicrimated me by my young age, or when anons would vandalize my userpage because I reverted their vandalism to the Miles "Tails" Prower page. Overall, what I am trying to say is that I have had to run in with the occasional jerk, but I didn't let it hamper my spirit, and it didn't drive me away from Wikipedia, because I have run in to many jerks, but I'm stillediting. YOu should too, don't let someone's jerkiness stop you from editing, You're a sweet girl and it would bad to see you go. Karrmann 00:46, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Dear Phaedriel, I don't know that I ever came across you, so I can't say that I'll miss you, but I read your beautiful message of support for Kate, and realized that you're one of the Wikipedians we need. I don't want to put pressure on you, and of course you must make your own decisions, but know at least that your return would be very very much welcomed. AnnH 07:55, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to hear you go. Please reconsider leaving. Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 14:00, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Dear Phaedriel, sometimes the Wiki can be a very nasty place, and it seems like you've gotten more than your share of abuse. Listen to yourself and do what feels right for you. That's the only thing important. But if you leave, please remember that many of us respect you as a very fine asset to this community. I've often been impressed by the kindness and tolerance you've shown to others. Godspeed. Valentinian (talk) 20:13, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
