"used to cover the horse's mouth" (this version) suggests a phalera confused with a bit guard. As far as I can tell, the phalera was a harness decoration, somewhat like a concho, that attached to the harness and had some additional decoration dangling from it. Hence a typical phalera had 3 attachment points. Phalerae came in sets, often of 5. --Una Smith (talk) 23:36, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
