Phalkot is one of the 51 Union Councils of Abbottabad District in the North-West Frontier province of Pakistan [2]. Most of the people are Awans with the Abbasies in a minority, the Union Council is lead by the Nazim Malik Mushtaq Ahmed, most of the people are poor and lead a simple life.

Phalkot Malsa is located at 34° 9' 40N 73° 22' 30E and has an average elevation of 1747 metres (5734 feet)[3]

[edit] Subdivisions

The Union Council is subdivided into three areas Malikpur (Janderbari), Phalkot and Malsa[1], that include other settlements including Jhulgran, Muslimabad, Garral, Kutli Sehana Buni Gali and Upri Kutli. Malikpur (Janderbari) is main village in UC having the population of around 10,000. Major casts is AWAN, whereas some Karlal are also there. Major bridaries are; Najiali, Saghwal, Jalwal, Langral, Bhadral, Pirwaal, Baksial etc. all these are the subcasts of Awan Tribe (Dhani Pir).

Hindko is widely spoken throughout the area, Urdu being national language also understand and spoken here. English and Pashto is spoken and understood by some people. In one of Phulkot suburb Malikpur Najiali Nakkra, being highly educated area, English & Arabic is also spoken and understood by the people. Most popular personality of this UC is Malik Muhammad Arif, who served with different organizations including; Prime Ministers House and also United Nations as Senior Field Officer for AJK. Malik has worked with PTCL as Director (Procurement) and presently he is working with Etisalat UAE as Advisor on procurement.
