MechAssault: Phantom War received generally mixed reviews. IGN gave it a 7.0 out of 10 and GameSpot gave it a 7.1 out of 10, while GameSpy gave it a 1.5 out of 5 and it averaged 4.5 out of 10 at Electronic Gaming Monthly. The game's praise came mostly from its well-made FMV cutscenes and well-acted voice acting. Common criticisms include lack of online play, lackluster graphics compared to other DS titles, shortness of the single player campaign, and issues with the game mechanics.
