No free alternative can exist given the likeness of the character the Phantom is a trademark and thus protected.. It is a low resolution copy of a comic book cover that doesn't even show the cover in its entirity (check out this site to see the cover in its original form: http://www.deepwoods.org/usa/dc_m01.jpg); The image was released to the media to promote the issue in question, issue 1 of The Phantom miniseries, DC Comics 1988; It does not limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the comic book in any way; Copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the comic book cover art on another comic book; The image is significant; it was created by a notable comic book artist, Joe Orlando.
