[edit] Re: meetup 5

Hey, how was it?

I was totally intending to go, but I got some unexpected bad news yesterday, so I didn't really feel up to it this morning. pfctdayelise (talk) 02:52, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

It was good. Jimmy riffed on some of the usual topics, particularly Wikipedia and wikis in schools (I believe that's what the conferences have been about), but also some of the recent Australian press coverage - the Ellen Fanning thing, but also a similar incident with Karl Stefanovic. Most of the people there seemed to be interested in the broader issues than the mechanics of the projects, but that was ok. Someone took a few photos, they should be up later in the day :) --bainer (talk) 03:32, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:ARIA awards.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:ARIA awards.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 00:15, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki Meetups

I've had a read at your meeting results, and am wondering if it is useful for someone (ie me) to come to such meetings when I cannot offer anything to the meeting, and have no idea of what you are talking about (well I do have a general understanding, after reading the melb. meta page and have read a bit about Wikimedia Australia). Hmm... Phgao 15:57, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes for course it is interesting to meet other Wikipedians, and get to know the faces behind the users and what type of day job or interests everyone has. Also, do you choose the city library because it is quieter? Phgao 14:07, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:The Drones promotional photo.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of descrption pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. [edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Triple J J Award logo.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Triple J J Award logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:34, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Australia 2020 Summit linkspam

Hi Pfctdayelise. The Oz Ideas wiki appears to be very new with very little activity. Per the guidlelines at Wikipedia:External links, I removed the external link as I feel it's inclusion only serves to drive traffic to a website that adds little or no value to the article. Why didn't I remove the link to http://2020summit.org ? I only reviewed the anon edit at the time and undid the most recent edit, that being the inclusion of the Oz Ideas link. I actually think the link to http://2020summit.org/ should be removed for similar reasons but I'll refrain from removing the link should your reasons for adding them outweigh my concerns. I'll await your reply on that one. Both sites hardly qualify as a reliable source of information on the summit so linking them in the article only serves to promote their existence. Cheers. -- Longhair\talk 11:44, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Anon bias doesn't come into it. The links are simply external links to third party sites concerning the summit, nothing more. Both links do not appear to be reliable sources. There's plenty of information from reliable sources on the summit that we could use to greatly expand the article. Both links you've suggested have very little to offer. -- Longhair\talk 00:55, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your review

Your review of Wikipedia: The Missing Manual was excellent. (As for other comments about it on my user talk page, I did get a barnstar and a comment about that, so your comment was number three, I think.) To address a couple of points of puzzlement:

The omission of WP:IAR was deliberate, because, as you noted, the book is primarily intended for new editors and those with limited experience. For them, I think IAR is more a distraction or even misleading (underneath IAR is the concept of doing what helps the project, regardless of rules; editors with little experience don't have the deeper understanding of Wikipedia, I think, that helps them judge when IAR should kick in). It was a useful rule in the early days, when there wasn't a thicket of intricately fought-over policies and guidelines, and it's still a useful reminder to those with a lot of experience, but for someone new, it's just a potentially confusing meta thing.

As for images, part of the explanation of what the books says (and what it doesn't cover) is that this area isn't one that I regularly work in. But more importantly, I think the issue of fair use is (a) gnarly, (b) changing, and (c) only going to continue down the path of permitting less and less fair use. The simplest way to deal with images - the approach I took - was to ignore uploading to en.wikipedia, in favor of uploading to the commons, which doesn't permit fair use at all. Given space constraints, I'd almost certainly have done that even if I didn't think (b) and (c) were true.

Finally, what I wrote about Wikipedia was limited by the approach that O'Reilly/Pogue Press takes in the Missing Manual series. In my draft there was, for example, a chapter on how decisions get made at Wikipedia; that didn't make the final cut because it wasn't tutorial (step-by-step) oriented, as was (is) the rest of the book, and the MM series in general. So the book has nothing about how policies and guidelines come about or change (rough consensus), or the underlying philosophy about not voting, or Wikipedia's libertarian (at least to me) underpinnings. I would expect to see much more of that in the forthcoming How Wikipedia Works, which will be interesting to compare. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:41, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm hoping that sales of the book will be enough to justify a second edition, ideally to be published near the end of 2008. I do want to expand it, with additional chapters on bots, customized software for editing Wikipedia, and specialized vandal-fighting tools, plus a chapter on how policy and guidelines can be changed. And fixes to things like the error that you pointed out regarding free content licensing. But, as noted above, I'm constrained by the MM approach - as fascinating as I find Wikipedia, philosophy and background stories don't fit into the book. (But no "sequel".)
RfAs are actually already covered (page 197); I have doubts that IAR will ever be, for reasons stated above. I'll be very interested in how the second book on Wikipedia (May 2008 scheduled publishing date), How Wikipedia Works, handles this; perhaps I'll change my mind when I see their approach. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:14, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Right, that's another topic - How can I become an admin? - that I don't intend to touch with a ten-foot pole. We already have enough folks who think that Wikipedia is something like a video game - score enough points (edits, successful CSDs, whatever) and you get promoted to the next level. The only admins I personally want at Wikipedia are those who consider the matter to be no big deal - being an admin allows them to do more, and be more useful, but if they never got it, or lost it, they'd still be editing because editing makes them feel good - it's fun, educational, contributes to a larger good, whatever. If someone is good enough to be an admin, I think that either (a) they'll figure that out, or (b) other editors will recognize it and make the suggestion. So putting the matter in the book is only going to increase the percentage of RfA candidates who (a) fail, (b) pass but are a higher risk to the project, or (c) do few or no edits once they've gotten their "promotion". -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:57, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Regarding the Commons and media, it seems clear to me that audio and video are going to play a larger and larger role in Wikipedia as time goes on, albeit (for the forseeable future) less important than text and images. Audio and video got all of two paragraphs mention in the book (page 291); that's something I'd like to expand on in the next version. I'll make a note of your offer (thanks!) and hope to take advantage of it later this year. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:27, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Regarding Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia, I did add it at some point to the Editor's index, so in that sense I do know about it. But it is a neat project, I agree; I've made a note to myself to add it to chapter 9 (page 167, bottom), unless it goes somewhere else in the book. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 14:01, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] the Sydney Journal

Hi there, Just thought I'd drop you, and the other people at the meetup, a line and mention that the first edition of the Dictionary of Sydney's online, peer-reviewed journal is now live.

The Sydney Journal is the first (and most academically rigorous) "product" of the Dictionary. It will be a quarterly publication with a variety of texts from upcoming Dictionary articles and is hosted by UTS E-press. This edition features 4 thematic articles, 6 ethnicities and 5 suburbs - all specifically related to Sydney.

I hope you find it useful and interesting - If nothing else it's essays are eminently referenceable for their corresponding articles here on WP.

[edit] editing help

Hi there again!

A university class I've been trying to convince to get involved in using WP in their class has today agreed to do so. In the class they rewrote the text of Religious Nationalism. I was wondering if you could have a look at it and edit it mercilessly (as the saying goes). Perhaps if you could convince others to get in on the act too that would be great.

Here is the diff of the edit they made [2].

Thanks for your help,

Witty Lama 11:00, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Please note that the section Religious Nationalism has now been separated from the main article Nationalism into its own article Religious nationalism. Please join in and help bring this newly formed article up to standard. Especially important is avoiding a Systemic Bias and adding Citations.
