[edit] Moving articles
Please don't move articles using copy and paste. This is harmful, as it doesn't preserve history of the article. You can use the move tab instead, or, if it's not possible, request the article to be moved to at Wikipedia:Requested moves.
Also, please don't mark major edits as minor. It makes it harder to follow changes to Wikipedia. -- Naive cynic 04:32, 30 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi Peter,
This is known as the 'rollback' function, avaliable to Sysops of Wikipedia. It is generated as part of the software itself, and is neither a template nor manual addition. If you have further questions, feel free to let me know on my talkpage. :)

[edit] News from Esperanza
Hello, fellow Esperanzians! This is just a friendly reminder that elections for Administrator General and two advisory council positions have just begun. Voting will last until Friday, December 30, so make sure you exercise your right to vote! Also, I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Esperanza mailing list. I urge all members to join; see Wikipedia:Esperanza/Contact for more information. All you need to do is email me and I will activate your account. This will be a great way to relax, stay in touch, and hear important announcements. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?)
This message was delivered to all Esperanza members by our acting messenger, Redvers. If you do not wish to receive further messages, please list yourself at WP:ESP/S. Thanks.
[edit] Hi, I'm new and I have some questions!
I recently joined wikipedia, and came upon your user page. What interests me is how you added all the boxes on the right side of the pages like "This user has used too many of these boxes" and "This user is made of meat." Duinemerwen 23:26, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Deletion of 'liberal wikipedians' category
Hi. I saw you're (like me) listed in this category which is up for deletion. Hoped you'd like to vote in favor of keeping it... Thanks! Larix 02:16, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] "My" boxes (nothing's mine on Wikipedia)
Hi, Peter, you're more than welcome. The only problem is that since they're "mine", I might mess around with them, and the changes would be reflected on your userpage, so you could find that you suddenly have a box that doesn't match the colour of the surrounding boxes, or that it has text that you don't agree with. It's quite likely, for example, that I'll modify the User:Musical Linguist/HV to say that I agree with Humanae Vitae and Ordinatio Sacerdotalis once I've started an article on Ordinatio Sacerdotalis (I don't like red links). If that's okay with you, fine. If you'd rather keep complete control over the colours and wording, I suggest you create a page called (something like) User:Peter McGinley/BXVI, then go to User:Musical Linguist/BXVI, press the edit box, copy the entire contents, and paste it into your own box. For example, my good friend Str1977 made his own User:Str1977/Ultramontanus box, but admitted to having "stolen" it from me!
Nice to see someone who shares my principles, by the way! Cheers, AnnH (talk) 10:21, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stable versions
Hi! I don't know if you're aware that currently under discussion is a stable versions policy which seeks to restrict the freely-editable nature of Wikipedia by protecting articles once they are deemed to be "stable" and moving them to a separate namespace. This policy represents a structural change in the open nature of Wikipedia, and inhibits the freedom of users - even logged-in ones - in instantly updating an article, since openly-editable versions of articles will be called "working drafts" under the new proposal. For me, as a liberal Wikipedian, the proposed policy is quite unacceptable. You can express your opinion at Wikipedia talk:Stable versions. Thanks, Ronline ✉ 08:15, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] User categories
Hi, there is a vote going on about wether it should be allowed to list yourself in a POV category. It's basically the same question as when they wanted to delete 'wikipedians by politics' but now they want to make it policy. this is the link: Wikipedia:Proposed_policy_on_userboxes#Comments_and_Voting Please vote! Hi thanks for the message about vandalism.. but i'm not entirely sure what article you were referring to. I haven't vandalised anything.. ? thanks 203.211.69.86 11:31, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
What are you talking about? All I did was wikified the words Kung fu. 203.211.69.86 11:37, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi there.. that's fine.. I should have identified it as vandalism and reverted it. I did look twice but I also thought the picture was kind of strange as well. Anyway my main account is User:Swollib and I am a member of the counter vandalism unit, I just forgot to log in when I saw something that needed to be wikified. After all, it does look like he's doing kung fu. LOL 203.211.69.86 11:43, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] An Esperanzial note
As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.
In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)
Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...
Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.
Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

[edit] A short Esperanzial update
As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.
As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

[edit] Image:Patrick dempsey.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Patrick dempsey.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Oden 07:55, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Replaceable fair use images
Hello!
After noticing that one of the images you have uploaded appears to be a replaceable fair use image (Image:Nick park.jpg) I have reviewed your contributions and found several images which might be replaceable. There is more information on the use of fair use images on Wikipedia here: Wikipedia:Fair use.
You can view your upload log here. If you have any questions regarding the use of images on Wikipedia you can leave a message on my talk page.
Sincerely, --Oden 07:07, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Federer v Gonzalez
Hope I didn't spoil your fun at piling up nine versions of 2007 Australian Open - Men's Singles for intermediate results between Federer and Gonzalez. Let me kindly remind you of WP:NOT. Kncyu38 11:11, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Also, please remember to avoid using the preview button. Overusing the preview button can be considered blatant POV-pushing trolling vandalism and lead to an indefinite community ban... Kncyu38 11:55, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- My personal opinion is that only the final result of any sporting event should be posted, but that's only my opinion. You see, server space is not for free. The preview button text is aimed at that very problem: Too many users, for example, tend to post two tiny edits instead of using the preview button. What they don't see is that with every edit, another complete copy of the edited page is stored on the servers (that's how wikis work). The preview button essay is meant ironic and actually encourages use of the preview button, instead of creating too much avoidable load for the servers. Regards, Kncyu38 15:16, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Advice requested
Hi Peter. I've been attempting to overview and tidy up the geography cats which involve the places where people live. There appear to be two useful ways of doing it - by region, and by size. Organising by size is difficult because User:Hmains uses the term settlements to cover all sizes of communities, and has altered dictionary definitions [1] to fit his own understanding of the term - [2]. However, community appears to be the term used most often to describe the places where people live, regardless of size. This is the definition of community - [3]. Hmains has reverted much of my work, and insists on settlements being the term we should use - basing it on this decision, which was a declined proposal to rename Settlements by region to Populated places by region. What do you think? Is settlement the appropriate term for covering human communities ranging from well established cities down to refuge camps? Is Human community a viable alternative? Are there other choices? I have started a discussion here and here, with the above wording, but no response as yet. I have left this message on the talk pages of active Geography Project members. And then on this page. I am a bit lost as the best place to discuss this issue. I don't want to delete or rename any category. And I don't want to get into a revert war. I'd like an open debate to reach sensible consensus. I'm now leaving this message on the pages of WikiProject Category members. Can you advise? SilkTork 19:59, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
