[edit] Userpage

Does my userpage look good enough to be in the userpage contest, Please let me know on my talk page (by the way it was made by an accident)--Seadog.M.S 15:57, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

It's certainly good enough to enter :) I can't guarantee it will win, or even pass the first stage, but you might as well give it a go if you want to, you've nothing to loose! Incidentally, could you please remove the image from your signature- they are not a good idea. Take a look at WP:SIG#Images for more info. Cheers, Petros471 21:13, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fun at RfAr

Was just doing a quick scan of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration to see if there was anything I should know about and was rather socked to see your name in the TOC! Glad to see it's nothing too serious though (as in you obviously haven't done anything wrong and it should get rejected straight off) :) Petros471 21:39, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I have managed to annoy a number of editors who seem intent on some very specific interpretations of policies both real and imagined. Hey ho. Hope you are doing well. Best, Gwernol 22:24, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching

Hey Petros,

Is Admin Coaching still active? I noticed on the admin coaching page there is a backlog of unassigned coaches and candidates. Just thought I'd drop a note and see what was up. Best wishes, Firsfron of Ronchester 03:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It's supposed to be ;) I didn't realise that a few extra coaches had signed up since I last looked (think only new requests appeared on my watchlist). Thanks for prodding me, I've sent out a few of my standard pings to requests at the top of the list to see if they want coaching, so I'll assign them coaches (including yourself) asap. I've been pretty busy recently so that's why I haven't been paying quite as close attention to the AC page as before. Cheers, Petros471 20:13, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, no problem. :) Thanks for the quick response. Best wishes, Firsfron of Ronchester 21:50, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect Error

As discussed, the University of New Jersey at Durham article was should have been redirected to Duke University rather than the UNC-Duke Rivalry in accordance with other sports nicknames redirecting to the teams they represent. Thanks - Dubc0724 12:29, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I suggest you read my closing statement at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/University of New Jersey at Durham. Petros471 13:04, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks - sorry I didn't see your message at the top. I've made the proper request for correction at the UNC-Duke Rivalry page. Thanks again Dubc0724 14:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching

Yes I'm still interested and this is the perfect time for me over the next couple of weeks becaue of my school holidays. Im just not quite sure how the Coaching box works though, so if you could help me it would be great. eg. I couldnt get my name to show.

Cheers, Jasrocks (talk) 22:21, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm still interested in admin coaching, too, but simply won't have the time until after the 7th of November. I'd like to remain in the queue, but please don't assign me a coach until after that date (I'll drop you a line when I'm ready). I won't add myself to the box just yet. :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 22:24, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank You

Thank you for taking your time to take of that little period . I did not realy realize it, in fact I saw in the history log of my page that the page that you edited it. I was curious to see what you did. It took me like five minutes to see what you did:). So thanks again for taking time to fix that little mistake.Oh yeah and I followed your advice and took off the image (even though I loved it) --Seadog.M.S 00:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] EA Elections Thanks

Hi Petros :)

Thank you so very much for your kind vote. I hope that I can live up to the high standards set by others AC members, and help continue Esperanza down it's wonderful path. All the best, Thε Halo Θ 11:56, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] World Ahead Publishing closing

I'm glad that you did separate them out on your closing, but you realize the somewhat bizarre situation you've created, where we have books without "sufficiently notable" authors existing now, and that, even though they've produced three "notable" books, the publisher itself isn't notable. Thoughts at all? --badlydrawnjeff talk 16:07, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm aware of the situation I created, though I'm not sure I'd call it 'bizarre' (though I admit it was an interesting afd to close). I was trying to follow the consensus on the afd as far as possible, I think there was consensus to delete the articles I did, while the ones I closed as no consensus had valid objections raised to their deletion. It is quite possible that people think a book is notable, but a separate article on the author/publisher is not notable. I also think it's quite possible some of those kept articles would be deleted if nominated separately (I guess I should probably do that if no-one else has to ensure that a clear result for all the articles emerges). Petros471 19:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
I dunno, it just seems like a rather unique situation that's come up. I don't know if I'll DRV or not (it wouldn't be due to any ineptitude on your end as much as a cleanup of a bizarre situation), but if I do, I'll drop you a note. --badlydrawnjeff talk 00:53, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching

A while back you signed up for admin coaching, but were not interested in becoming an admin. That is fine, however to get a better idea about how and if the programme can help you (if you are still interested) could you say a bit more about what you want out of it- what would your aims from admin coaching be? Petros471 16:57, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi. First of all I would like to apologize for the long delay. I have been abroad for a few weeks and at the very moment I am involved in a multitude of projects which will give me very little free time for the coming two weeks. Since I posted my traineeship request many things have changed: I have reduced my workflow and directed myself more towards tweaking and anti-vandalism; though I do intend to return to serious content creation in the near future. I also learned how to appreciate certain admin functions, and while my primary aim is still not to become an admin, if I am right for the job, I would not mind becoming one.
You ask what I would like to get out of the programme. Basically, I would like to become an all-round contributor. While I have decent experience in anti-vandalism, I believe that Wikipedia does not have great problems in this respect, but is in dear need for experienced contributors. Thus that could be one of the areas I could be coached in. I think that I can be a valuable resource to Wikipedia given my good English, knack for research, and reasonable objectivity.
To sum it up, I would like to be trained just like a prospective admin would be, in all areas. I think I have enough experience in antivandalism, policies and the tools involved, to not need a great deal of training in that area. One fact about me (advantage/disadvantage) is that I am extremely picky about stuff, therefore if you need to choose an area for me it would best be something where quality counts over quantity.
Regards.  VodkaJazz / talk  18:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandal

Hi Petros, I placed a warning tag on a talk page of a user who has a long history of getting into inflammatory debate. He removed information from an AfD discussion so I placed the tag on his talk page. He responded by placing one on my talk page. I'd like and admin to remove the vandal tag from my talk page because removing warnings can be considered vandalism in itself, could you do that? Thanks --Strothra 22:21, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Removed template, left the personal message behind. If needed I'll take a look at this situation in more detail when I've got time. Petros471 18:18, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Coordinating admin coaching

Hi! I'm kind of semi-active at the moment. I don't think I have enough time to take on another coachee, much less coordinate the program. I may have more time in a couple months. Perhaps Titoxd would be interested in taking up the reigns again? If not, I imagine we may be able to find a new person. EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 05:24, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Yeah... the problem here is that I'm much more busy as well. EWS23 and me discussed about having multiple coordinators. What do you think of the idea? Titoxd(?!?) 15:42, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
The advantage I had when I did it on my own (and had the time to do it!) is that I kept brief notes on coaches and trainee's (like free from x date, order to poke about next trainee, that sort of thing) which is harder if several people are involved. It is also easier for messages to get 'lost in the system' if there are several. We could give it a go though, or try and find (post on ESP talk page?) someone else to take over 'full time'. Petros471 17:34, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Plazoid deletion

It sure seems to me like certain "users" (including "BoosterBronze" who doesn't exist and "Charlesknight" who has quit) have had it in for The Plazoid due to its political perspective, which is radically anti-capitalist -- which is no suprise, since it is produced by homeless people and centers on issues of social justice and civil liberties. While on a far more meager scale (understandably considering the population and urban density numbers), The Plazoid fills the role of publications such as the Street Sheet in larger cities like San Francisco.

While I don't share many of the opinions of this zine, to pretend it doesn't exist and hasn't had an impact on the culture of Arcata is incorrect and speaks of a desire to re-write our local history. The only real "user" who voted for this deletion was Metatree, who by their posting history seem to have a special affection bordering on obsession with The Arcata Eye, which is a publication The Plazoid was partially created as a reaction to (according to at least one of its homeless contributors, Paul Billups, who told me this in 2004).

Although I understand his or her attempts to prevent The Arcata Eye page from being morphed into a one-sided diatribe on its anti-homeless leanings, I believe this deletion crosses the line into an active suppression of an opposition viewpoint.

Even though this is a relatively minor zine, and one about a tiny college town that most people on Wikipedia haven't even heard of, I hesitate to simply watch this kind of censorship pass by unhindered. If Wiki means to meaningfully research the political and media environment of this community then all voices need to be included, even those which most of us don't agree with. Please consider this request to undelete The Plazoid, which is accompanied with my offer of re-writing the page to better reflect this zine's place in local history. Charles Douglas 07:02, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

{{/Note}} Petros471 18:18, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't mean to be a pest on this issue but there is already some degree of acrimony spreading due to the censorship of The Plazoid entry from Wiki. Please let me know when a good time to discuss the issue might be, you can call me at [removed for privacy reasons] at your conveinence. Charles Douglas 01:36, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Apologies for the delay in replying. I deleted the article in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policies and guidelines. The article was up for deletion via the articles for deletion process, and there was consensus at the afd debate to delete the article (no arguments at all were presented in favour of keeping the article). I would imagine that a new article would still be deleted due to the lack of notability. I don't really feel justified in undeleting the article, but if you want to write a new one go ahead (though be aware that it may also be nominated for deletion), or if you still think the article should be undeleted you can try a deletion review- I will not oppose any decision made there to undelete if consensus to do so is reached. Petros471 15:38, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

I was quite shocked when I did a random google search for my net handle, and found out that I 'didn't exist.' I'm not sure how I'm going to cope with this. Maybe I should start a blog about myself, and then get really mad that I don't have a wikipedia page about myself. That's a good idea. For the record, I have no knowledge of the political bias of your pamplet, nor have I ever ever seen or heard of it, and I spent most of January in Arcata. [edit] Admin coaching

Hey Petros!

Since my admin coachee, user:Ginkgo100 is now an admin, I'm ready for a new coachee. :) Let me know when you have time to assign new people. Firsfron of Ronchester 20:54, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

More admin coaching stuff: My coachee, Master of Puppets, is incommunicado, so I could be assigned a new coachee if there is still a wait list. If MOS returns I wouldn't mind coaching 2 at once. Let me know. :) --Fang Aili talk 15:59, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello again

I have worked on my userpage a little bit and I am wondering if you think I should enter the Userpage contest--SeadogTalk 03:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Looking good :) You might want to try making your talk page colour scheeme fit in more with that you've used on your main userpage/subpages. If you want to give the UPA a go, go for it! You've got nothing to loose :) Petros471 15:19, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SharedIPEDU blocking

In future, please don't block any IP addresses indefinitely unless they are open proxies or authorised by a CheckUser. This applies especially for educational IPs such as 63.96.196.195 (talkcontribsdeleted contribsWHOISRDNStraceRBLshttpblock userblock log) or else Category:Requests for unblock gets flooded with complaints or unblock requests. Always set them to anonymous-only and provide a helpful block log message such as "Blocked for persistent vandalism (anon-only). Please create an account at home and login to edit here." Thanks. --  Netsnipe  ►  14:24, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I can't say I can remember that blocking specifically. I can only assume that I meant to block for a short period and accidentally clicked on block without having changed the option in the drop down list. I would never deliberately indef block an IP, and my block summary of 'vandalism' is what I usually use for blocks of 24 hours or less. Thanks for fixing it now. Cheers, Petros471 15:13, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
I also notice that I used a temporary block notice on the IP's talk page, not an indef block one, so I'm sure that I just clicked on the wrong thing on the block screen rather than meaning to indef! Petros471 15:16, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Talk:Webserver directory index/

Hello, back in April you protected this page against re-creation. That stuck for a while, but for some reason, it's not protected anymore, and once again we're getting a raft of article creations and speedy deletions. Could you re-protect this article? Here's a link to the page log: [1] Thanks. -/- Warren 17:27, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, but it looks like another admin has already done so. Cheers, Petros471 15:06, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin coaching question

Hey Petros,

When you get a chance, could you stop on by the Admin coaching topic at the Esperanza talk page, and give a brief overview of what the job of coordinating it entails? There are some people interested in doing so, but they were worried that admin status was needed. Thanks! -- Natalya 20:24, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Done. Petros471 15:05, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks Petros, I have changed the scheme to Lavender and I will probably do so on my main page. Hey I changed my mind at the last minute so now I have decided to be the judge this time around and maybee try for it next time. Thanks for your advice.--[[User:Seadog.M.S|<font style="background:

I'm trying (pretty successfully!) to be inactive on Wikipedia at the moment, but I suppose being coordinator for a round or two isn't too much work. Let me know when the current round is finished and I'll do the next one. Petros471 15:47, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Blocked by yourself for persistent vandalism (automotive and Japanese manga/anime articels). Same pages are now being vandalised the same way by User:24.46.255.158. I did a blanket revert of all edits in the meantime, but didn't bother posting a warning as seemed pointless. --DeLarge 23:08, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Please see WP:AIV for vandalism reports (I'm basically inactive at the moment). Petros471 15:58, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

[edit] Sunderland Message Board

Would dispute deletion of this page relating to the largest supporters' group of Sunderland AFC.

As pointed out in the deletion discussion:

1) Group has been misconstrued as just existing as a message board. Group started from a message board, hence the origins of the acronym SMB. 2) Sufficient argument was made to establish notability, no reason was given to dispute this. Decision to delete not based on consensus in the discussion. 3) Why just this group? - do a search on "football supporters clubs" and there are hundreds. All for deletion?

Conclude that the article should have been marked for clean-up (to make it clear that SMB referred to a physical group), not deletion. Would request restoration.Cathd6 12:24, 13 November 2006 (UTC) I should have said "thank you" - and just to let you know that I've noted you're busy so I'll give it a couple of weeks before taking it for general discussion. cheers! Cathd6

That article was deleted as a result of a WP:AFD discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sunderland Message Board, rather than a speedy or proposed deletion. I interpreted the consensus (taking into account arguments rather than simple votes) of the discussion to be delete. I still stand by that decision, however you are welcome to request a deletion review of that decision to see if the community agrees with you. Petros471 17:02, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
