[edit] Introduction
Furka is a village in the south-eastern part of Macedonia. Eastern of the river Vardar, through Pugana and Gabroska Reka, and western of Dojran Valley, it's settled on the 21 km2 height with the same name. On 10 km far from Dojran, Furka is in the middle of the imagined triangle between Dojran, Bogdanci and Valandovo. It's settled on atitude above sea-level of 350m, but the highest peak is on 456m. Around the village there are heights composed of sandy soil and granit rocks. Where it's possible, people use the ground for vine-growing and fruit-growing. Today in Furka are living 1000 people, all Macedonians and Ortodox Christians.
[edit] The name
For the origin of the name of Furka there are a few theories. According to the legends Old Furka had a shape of the cyrillic letter ะค, or F. But, some authors say that the village got its name from foreign words. By Stjepan Antoljak, name origin is from the greek word "furka" that means killing place (he says that in Furka happened blinding of Samuil soldiers, that probably is not correct). And the third theory, of Aleksandar Stojanovski, who says that turkish word "fursat" (bad people) is origin of the name, because the villagers didn't allow the Turkish people to live in Furka.
