Petrykivka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Petrykivka (Ukrainian: Петриківка) is a townlet of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province) in east-central Ukraine. There are about 5 thousand inhabitants. It is famous for its folk art center and decorative painting.[1]
By peoples legend, the settlement was founded by Cossack Petryk, who gathered under his protection the serves from the local villages.[2]
Petrykivka was first mentioned in historical documents in 1772, when the residents of neighbouring Kurylivka village asked Koshovyi Otaman Petro Kalnyshevsky to move their Orthodox Chapel to safer place because of underflooding.[2] According to that request the wooden church was moved to Petrykivka.
