A petrifying well is a well with the mythical ability to turn everyday objects into stone. This process is actually caused by the high mineral content in the water which covers the objects, and causes them to appear petrified.
Notable "petrifying wells" in England are located in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire and Matlock Bath, Derbyshire.
At Knaresborough, in the days when Mother Shipton was born, it was deemed witchcraft.
The Knaresborough petrifying well was first opened to the public in 1630 and even today people are still amazed by its 'abilities'.
