Peterston-super-Ely
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peterston-super-Ely (Welsh: Llanbedr-y-fro) is a small village situated about eight miles from the centre of Cardiff in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, United Kingdom.
[edit] History and amenities
As its name suggests, the village lies on the River Ely, on the other side of which is the Coryton estate, and the local parish church (in heavily restored simple Perpendicular style) is dedicated to Saint Peter. There are small remains of a castle.
Peterston-super-Ely is the primary outdoor filming location for the Welsh-language soap opera, Pobol y Cwm.
The village holds an annual arts festival [1] in the autumn and each January it stages a pantomime which is renowned throughout the Vale as a must-see event. The fairy's performance in last year's show became infamous throughout the region and garnered reviews more usually reserved for the official festival. Confirmed acts for this year's festival include soft rock legend Bonnie Tyler, who is duetting with pop princess Kylie Minogue, whose family has Welsh forebears.
[edit] Famous inhabitants
The former politician and European Commissioner Neil Kinnock is an inhabitant of the village.
