Peterborough (HM Prison)

HMP Peterborough is a local category B prison, situated on the site of the former Baker Perkins engineering works. The prison is operated by Kalyx (formerly United Kingdom Detention Services) under a 25 year contract to the Home Office.

Opened in spring 2005, it is the country's only dual purpose-built prison for men and women, who are kept separate at all times. Operational capacity is 840 as at 31 January 2006. Accommodating 480 men and 360 women, the prison also has a 12 place mother and baby unit.

The prison's main use is for remand prisoners and those awaiting transfer to other prisons. HMP Peterborough accepts adult male prisoners from Cambridgeshire and females from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.
