Peter Shirtliff (born 6 April 1961 in Hoyland, near Barnsley, Yorkshire) is a former English footballer. Shirtliff was a central defender who played for Sheffield Wednesday (two spells), Charlton, where he became became a part of Charlton folklore with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of a titanic Play-off final against Leeds, in 1987. Those 2 goals were priceless, as Charlton were in horrendous financial shape at that time & would more than likely have folded, had they slipped through the trap door, back into the old 2nd Division from where they came only the previous year. He became club captain & his hardworking, no nonsense displays cemented his place in the hearts of the Charlton faithful.

He also had spells at Wolves and Barnsley (during his time with Barnsley he also had a loan spell with Carlisle). His greatest achievements as a player were a third-place finish in Division One in 1992, and winning the League Cup in 1991 – both as a member of Sheffield Wednesday.

Shirtliff retired from the game in 1997, after 18 years as a professional footballer. He has since been youth team coach at Barnsley and Leicester. In 2005, he was appointed assistant manager at Mansfield Town. He became the manager of Mansfield following the dismissal of Carlton Palmer in September 2005, and lasted 15 months in the job before getting sacked in December 2006 following a poor run of results.

He has been appointed assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers.
