Peter Nattrass

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Peter Roland Nattrass is a recently retired high profile Perth businessman and politician, who was the Lord Mayor of the Perth City Council from 1995-2007, having succeeded Reg Withers in 1995. He was elected to the City of Perth council in 1977. He was re-elected Lord Mayor in 1999 and again in 2003. His term in the office of Lord Mayor is the longest ever held for the City of Perth. Nattrass was succeeded by the first female Lord Mayor of Perth, Lisa Scaffidi on the 21st October 2007 after he announced he would not seek re-election in the 2007 elections.

Peter was born to Joyce Nattrass whose husband, Roland Nattrass, was a consultant gynaecologist in Perth's public hospitals. He attended Hale School, UWA and the RCOG in London. He began private practice in 1975 and entered local politics in 1977. His political career culminated in his election as Lord Mayor of Perth in 1995. In July 2004, the West Australian newspaper colluded with Larry Graham, an independent MLA, to air allegations of domestic violence made by Margot Nattrass, his former wife. As a result, the Legislative Assembly voted on a motion to consider whether he was a fit and proper person to hold the position of Lord Mayor. The motion was lost (41/1). [1] [2] Nattrass is member of civic and planning commissions, Rotary, the WA Trotting assoc. and the Royal King's Park Tennis Club and the Royal Perth Yacht Club.

His partner is Liberal member for Curtin, Julie Bishop.
