Peter McMullin was a former-Mayor of Geelong in 2006.
Between 1996 to 1999, McMullin served on the Melbourne City Council as one of the Councillors of the City of Melbourne. With the support of the Labor Party, McMullin secured the position of Deputy Lord Mayor until his term expired in 1999.
In 1999, McMullin unsuccessfully recontested the Melbourne City Council Elections, losing his Central Ward seat to Wellington Lee, who went on to become Deputy Lord Mayor between 1999 and 2001.
Following the Victorian Government's dismissal of the Melbourne City Council in 2001 and the Government's reform of the Melbourne City Council, Peter McMullin emerged as one of the two favourites to be elected Lord Mayor. The other favourite was multi-millionaire shoe-retailer Peter Sheppard. McMullin was publicly endorsed by then-Premier Steve Bracks. In a surprising result, McMullin and Sheppard were defeated by businessman and then-Councillor John So.
Having failed to win the election, McMullin stood for the Geelong City Council Elections and was elected as a Councillor of Geelong. In 2006, he served year as Mayor of Geelong.
McMullin stood as the Labor Party candidate for the Federal seat of Corangamite in 2004 but failed to secure the nessasary 4% swing to obtain sufficient votes to be elected.[1]
