Peter D'Amato

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter D'Amato is a well-known carnivorous plant grower who has over thirty years experience in the field. His nursery, California Carnivores, houses the world's largest collection of carnivorous plants. In 1998, D'Amato published his first and only book, The Savage Garden (Ten Speed Press), which has proved to be very popular with both professionals and enthusiasts and is perhaps the most widely read book on the subject. His book has won the American Horticultural Society Book Award and the Quill & Trowel Award from the Garden Writers Association of America, both in 1999. D'Amato discovered his love for carnivorous plants as a child growing up in southern New Jersey in the 60's. His mother ordered him his first venus flytrap at a young age, and surprisingly, quickly killed it thinking they grew in dark steamy jungles. Obviously, he did not give up. After volunteering to do a school report on venus flytraps, one of his friends told him carnivorous plants grew right in the town he resided. After he observed and even dug up a few of the plants at his local bog, a strong love for carnivores has stayed with him ever since.
