Peter Carter, OBE, MCIPD is a British nurse and from 1995-2007, the Chief Executive of the Central and North West London Mental Health NHS Trust (previously the Brent, Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster Mental Health Trust). He became General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing in 2007, succeeding black American nurse Beverly Malone.

He commenced his NHS career by training as a psychiatric nurse at Hill End Hospital in Saint Albans. He also trained as a general nurse at St Albans City Hospital and the London Institute of Urology.
Peter Carter holds an MBA and a PhD from the University of Birmingham and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (MCIPD).

He succeeded Beverly Malone as General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing in January 2007.
