[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

Barry plays his club hurling with the famous James Stephens club in KIlkenny and has enjoyes much success. He won his first senior county title in 2004 before later winning a Leinster club title. 'The village' side, as it is known, later defeated Athenry in the club championship decider, giving captain of the team Barry a coveted All-Ireland club title. Barry won a second consecutive set of county and Leinster club honours.

[edit] Inter-county

Barry first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Kilkenny under-21 inter-county team. He won a Leinster medal at this level in 1994 before later collecting an All-Ireland medal following a victory over Galway in the final. The following year Barry was captain of the side as he collected a second Leinster title, however, his side were later beaten by Tipperary in the final. Barry joined the county senior team in 1996, however, it would be another few years before he became a regualr on the team. He won his first Leinster title in 1998, however, Kilkenny were later defeated by Offaly in the All-Ireland final. In 1999 Barry won a second provincial title, however, after reaching the All-Ireland final once again Kilkenny were beaten by an unfancied Cork team. In 2000 Kilkenny continued their provincial dominance and Barry won a third Leinster title. The prospect of losing a third All-Ireland final was unpalatable to Kilkenny, so much so that they completely destroyed Offaly in one of the most one-sided All-Ireland finals ever, giving Barry a first winners' medal. In 2001 he won a fourth Leinster medal, however, Kilkenny were later caught off guard and were beaten by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. The following year 'the Cats' were back on form as Barry captured a coveted National Hurling League medal. He later picked up a fifth Leinster title and a second All-Ireland medal soon followed following a defeat of Clare in the final. Barry won a sixth consecutive provincial medal in 2002 before adding a third All-Ireland medal to his collection after Kilkenny defeated Cork in an exciting championship decider. In 2004 Kilkenny were aiming for an unprecedented third All-Ireland title in-a-row. The chance of claiming a seventh consecutive Leinster title ended at the semi-final stage as Wexford defeated their greatest rivals with a lat minute goal. The chance of winning that third All-Ireland in-a-row was still on the cards, however, as Kilkenny squared up against Cork in a second consecutive championship decider. The game turned out to be a dull affair as Cork ended Kilkenny's dream with a 0-17 to 0-9 score line. In 2005 Barry was appointed captain of the team. He won his seventh Leinster title that year, however, Kilkenny were later beaten by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. Barry retired from inter-county hurling following that defeat.

[edit] Provincial

Barry also lined out with Leinster in the Railway Cup inter-provincial competition, however, he never won a Railway Cup title.
