Pete Clifton (b. 1962[citation needed]) is the head of BBC News Interactive.

He assumed the role on October 18, 2005[1] following Richard Deverell's 2005 July move to CBBC, first as Chief Operating Officer then as controller. He previously spent two years as editor following the departure of Editor-in-chief Mike Smartt in 2004. The News Interactive department includes BBC News Online, the BBC News website, CBBC Newsround, the Ceefax teletext service, the digital text service, On This Day, BBC's Interactive TV, the Action Network and a variety of news services to mobile phones and other mobile devices.[2]

He also spent two years on loan to BBC Sport, where he set up the BBC Sport website in 2000.[3]

Clifton was previously the editor of Ceefax[3], and before joining the BBC was a news and sports reporter at the Chronicle and Echo in Northampton[3], a sports journalist at the Exchange Telegraph national news agency[3], chief sports sub at the UK's Press Association (PA)[3] and editor of the PA's Teletext service[citation needed].

His successor as Editor of News Interactive was named on December 2, 2005 as Steve Herrmann.[4]

Mr Clifton admitted editing his own Wikipedia entry on the BBC Editors' Blog on the 16th of August, 2007,[5] and said he would now leave the editing of this page to others.
