Talk:Pervertible
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The correct term is pervertible. It was coined by David Stein, the co-founder of the Gay Male S/M Activists (GMSMA).
He also coined the phrase "safe, sane, and consensual."

[edit] Descriptive Content
It looks like we have two different editing approaches here with the pervertibles list. Some contributors want to add a line or two with more details on a particular object and/or its possible uses, and others prefer to let the object list stand on its own. Is there some way to resolve these two strategies?
[edit] silk ties = bad?
I've used silk ties for years. They make decent restraints and blindfolds. Anyone have a link, or somewhere else that could help explain to me why they're considered dangerous? Thanks.
[edit] Knives
It has knives listed under "Other teasing and pain inflinction" and "Avoid Using". Which should it be removed from? I'd say the latter.
[edit] on knives
I've never had a problem with them, so I'd agree ;) 64.4.109.139 20:52, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] does this belong?
The same effect can also be obtained by using (perverting, in fact) the "slave's" body as an object, e.g. as furniture to sit or rest the master's feet on, storing objects in his/her underwear or orifices (mainly oral and anal) or even parking a bike between his/her buttocks or using the butt-crack as a golf tee. Such methods are not uncommon in hazing either.
Right now, the above text is in the "Rationales" section. But it seems to me to describe the exact opposite of "pervertible" -- it describes treating body part normally seen as intimate and potentially sexual as everyday and non-sexual. I'm not removing it because I'm not very familiar with the use of the word "pervertible". --Allen 02:15, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
- The idea was that a pervertible is not defined by any intrinsic quality, unlike say the actual physical entities associated with most types of corporal punishment (e.g. caning, spanking in terms of implement viz. target), so the rationale must deal with the subjective logic of users of pervertibles: why do they use ('pervert') certain objects; as using pervertibles is not a separate fetishist 'cult' as such but part of a broader attitude, it make sense to try tie it in to this subjective attitude. [edit] Pervertible vs. Pervertable
Here is an excerpt of the gl-asb mailing list post from 1996 in which David Stein takes credit for coining the term (yes, Gorgik@[trimmed] was David Stein):
From: Gorgik@[trimmed] Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 14:31:51 -0400 To: gl-asb@QueerNet.ORG Subject: pervertables/cheapo dungeon Ropeman said this was a fun thread, and I agree, so maybe, as the coiner of the term "pervertables" <self-pat on back, since no one else is going to do it!>, I should contribute a little.
As you can see, the text at the start of the article that says "Pervertible (frequently misspelt "pervertable") is a term originally coined by David Stein" is inaccurate; while pervertible may be the preferred spelling now, David coined it as pervertable.
Unless someone comes up with an earlier usage of "pervertible" by David, I'll correct the article. Raindog469 21:37, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Usage for non-sexual contexts?
On Spanking, there was some discussion about whether "pervertible" could be used to describe implements used to spank in a non-sexual context (e.g., see [1]). See the discussion at Talk:Spanking#NOT_just_Allusions_to_paraphilism.
Now by looking at [2], I see there seem to be many other articles using the term "pervertible", claiming that the term can be used for non-sexual corporal punishment, and not just BDSM. It also appears that all of these references were added in by Fastifex (the same editor who has been on the Spanking article) about September 2005 (e.g., [3], [4], [5]). So either:
- Can someone provide sources for this use of pervertible in non-sexual contexts? If so, this article should be updated to show this usage.
- Otherwise, all these other articles need to be corrected in their use of "pervertible".

I've now removed or otherwise edited all the pages linking here so the term is only used for BDSM contexts. Mdwh 22:24, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bamboo skewers
Um is it really resonable to use bamboo skewers for spanking? They could be used for poking perhaps but using them for smacking spanking seems a bit far fetched Nil Einne 18:30, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- Clothes pegs seems even sillier. Again, could be used for other forms of causing pain but spanking? Nil Einne 18:32, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
