[edit] Vandalism on this page

It appears that some people have been persistently vandalising the Perth Glory squad list. Culprits tend to insert "Juandy Tan" or some related names into the squad list. The name links to an article about a fictional player with that name. The vandals tend to use the username Darkrifle or unnamed IP addresses.

I have already sent a warning to Darkrifle, and I see that Leithp has blocked one of the culprit IP addresses.

This sort of thing is very irresponsible, and quite frankly very irritating to those of us who have spent time generating quality A-League articles.

Please refrain from renaming "football" to "soccer" in this or other A-League/FFA articles.

The majority of A-League articles specify Football (soccer) or Association football in the introductory paragraph.

Replacing all instances of "football" with "soccer" in Australia related articles makes them inconsistent with other Wikipedia articles from international sources. Fox Sports and News Limited publications now refer to "soccer" as "football", and many media outlets distinguish the codes by saying "AFL Football", "NRL Football", "Rugby Union" or just "Football".

Note that the governing body is now Football Federation of Australia. ViXx 12:42, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

That's strange, clicking the football link on my local Murdoch paper's web site's front page gets me Aussie rules.Another Murdoch publication can't seem to decide; as I write this it has two columns, almost equally mindless, on the front page putting each side of the case. Maybe you're thinking of the SMH? Football Federation Australia's own ads for the A-League are careful to disambiguate it from other sports (not to mention previous Australian soccer leagues...) As for the official names, my understanding is that what counts on Wikipedia is local popular usage, officialdom be damned. My interpretation of that is that what West Coast Eagles fans call football trumps what Perth Glory fans call it in Perth-related articles, simply because there are more of the former. And calling it "soccer" has the added advantage of removing all confusion; there should not be a Category:Australian football clubs, for example, since it could just as easily be interpreted as Aussie rules clubs based anywhere in the world rather than Australian-based soccer clubs. Well for my media consumption the SMH, Foxtel, the ABC (and SBS) even the Telegraph are using the term football. Its the name of the game. Should there be Category:Australian football clubs, of course there should be. There is also Category:Australian rules football clubs--Tancred 00:15, August 20, 2005 (UTC)
I think this is because Tancred comes from Sydney (which is btw NOT the centre or capital of Australia). In most of the media in Victoria (ie. Hearald Sun, The Age, ABC, ch. 7, ch. 9. SBS is the only media outlet that calls it "football" and they are broadcast out of 'Sydney') "football" is called soccer, and I suspect that this is the case for all the other regions (bar Sydney). Soccer is the common name for the sport in most Australian states (bar NSW) and Wikipedia states that the most common name should be used in articles. Calling the sport "football" is a Sydney-centric view not shared by most in the rest of the country.
I also agree with Jiminy that the Category:Australian football clubs should be called Category:Australian soccer clubs or Category:Australian association football clubs so as not to confuse this sport with the other football codes, ie. footy (Aussie rules) and Rugby. It should also be noted that association football is the correct name for soccer, so as to distinguish it from the other codes. – AxSkov (☏) 06:32, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
I was thinking Category:Football (soccer) clubs in Australia, actually; it's ugly, but totally unambiguous and takes into account the fact most people who play or seriously follow soccer do call it football. (Comments, Sydneysiders?)
The FFA seems to have done a reasonably good job of sliding into the lexical niche vacated in Sydney by the fact the most popular football code there is usually called "league" — though I wonder what a Sydney Bulldogs fan would say if you asked them what the word "football" meant — but it's going to take longer for the semantics to change in the AFL states, if it ever happens. I find it notable that The Australian still calls the sport "soccer" in its headings, to prevent the paper from being laughed out of every newsagent south of the Murray, while its soccer writers call it football casually within the articles. This could get confusing fast, and I think clarity is the best way to go here, with concerns for local usage. J.K. 08:26, 20 August 2005 (UTC)


I think the key underlying issue is really "Which code do you support?". This should have absolutely no bearing on nomenclature. I maintain that disambiguation is rarely required because in a majority of cases, contextual information makes it quite clear. Where it is not clear to the random outside observer, I would support "football (soccer)" or "association football" appearing in the text. However, I do not support blanket replacement of "football" with "soccer" for no reason.

There should be no reason to deny "Association Football" the right to be identified in the first instance as "football". By saying this, I also extrapolate that there should be no reason to deny "Australian Rules" as football either.

As Wikipedia is an international website, and the balance of football articles are regarding Association Football, perhaps only AFL related articles need to have clarifying remarks in them? Maybe this is contraversial. By the way, I support AFL, Football and Rugby Union. ViXx. 14:00, 25 August 2005 (UTC)

This article is really very well done and is by far the best of the A-League club articles. Congratulations to the editors involved. My only suggestion would be to include a few more references justifying the various opinion statements eg. ...the public were very fond of Stange. Hi all. I've restructured this article, according to the guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football. Please help expand the sections that are empty or lacking in content. Also, please discuss the proposal to merge the article on former players into the 'Noted players' section. Normally, this would only include players who have had a significant impact (e.g. played over 100 games), but with only one season under their belt, most/all former players can be included. Hi. Yes, the idea of 'Noted players' is actually former players, rather than current players. Since there are few to choose from, I'd recommend posting all former players for the time being. Then, through time, the more famous of these ex-players can remain. I agree that the article I'm proposing to merge is far too big and shouldn't contain any current players. I have re-added Tony Franken to the notable player list. His position is justified as he was the #1 goalkeeper for 3 years and served as Goalkeeping Coach and mentor prior to gaining a coaching position with the Australian national team. All Perth Glory players who have any role with a national team should become a notable player. And yes, I was disappointed that the section I contributed about notable players was removed. The List of List of Perth Glory F.C. players is now part-complete with every Glory player added, the profiles of some players just need to be added.

I have a list of players that we're on the Glory squad but did not play a game, Where can these people go? Do we need a list on the page for players that did not play a game?

Remember that you're essentially replicating the information in. I think it's best to use this category for all past and present players, and a separate section (in the main team article) for past noted players. Fedgin 14:07, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Hey ive heard something about the club no longer existing next year, the stupid FFA have plans to no longer call it Perth Glory and changing the colours to Gold and Black to represent Western Australian colours. refer to Glory Boyz Forums, anyway i think this should be added to the page thanks.
