Persecution of Dalits

The Dalits in India are often either landless labourers or small land holders. There are sometimes clashes involving more powerful and often more numerous land owing communities and the Dalits.
Here is a list of major recent cases:
- Feb 12, 2003: In Kaithal, Haryana, shops run by the members of Dalit community were also allegedly looted by members of the OBC Jat community [1]
- Jan. 28, 2006: Attack on a Dalit Bant Singh, by upper caste OBC Jat youths[2].
- September 29, 2006: four Dalits in Khairlanji village of Maharashtra's Bhandara district by fellow villagers belonging to OBC Kunbi community[3]
- Aug 26, 2001: Dalit woman in Vanenur village in Bellary district, north Karnataka paraded naked by members of Valmiki community, a scheduled tribe[4].
- 4 September 2005: A Dalit woman, who won the panchayat election from Marriayaa block of Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, was forced to miss the oath-taking ceremony that as the OBC Yadav community of the village was angry at a dalit woman becoming village head[5].
- 31 August 2005: Nearly 60 Dalit houses were burned down in in Gohana at the instigation of Jat Mahapanchayat, an OBC organization[6]
The conviction rate under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act is 15.71%[7].
