Periyar University was established on September 17, 1997 on the 119th birth anniversary of E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker better known as Periyar by the Tamil Nadu government.[1] It covers the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu.
It has 55 colleges affiliated with it. Periyar University also has distance education called Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE), established in 2001.
