Periya Puranam (that is, the Great Puranas, Puranas meaning Epics) or Tiruttontarpuranam (that is, The Puranas of the Holy Devotees) is a great Tamil work, depicting the legendary poetic account of the lives and time of the sixty-three Nayanmars. It was complied during the 12th century by Sekkilar.
This work is a part of the corpus of Shaiva canonical works.
The Periya Puranam is the stories of the 63 saints. The Periya Puranam was written by Sekhizar in Tamil during the 12 Century. All of the saints lived in Tamilnadu, India. Of all the 63 saints Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar, and Sundaramurthy Nayanmar stand out to be the greatest. Although Sekhizar wrote the Periya Puranam that contained 63 saints, Manikavasagar also wrote the stories of 15 other saints. The only temple in the world that contains all 78 saints together is the Rajarajeshwari Peetam in Rush, New York. For more info about the temple and history go to [1]
