Peringathur is a census town in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala.

As of 2001 India census[1], Peringathur had a population of 42,079. Males constitute 45% of the population and females 55%. Peringathur has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 79%. In Peringathur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

It is believed that the name Peringathur was derived from Peringalath Ur. It gradually became Peringathur. It means the place where great wars took place. Kanaka mala, a small hill, situated near Peringathur where the asram of renowned writer Nithya Chaithanya Yathi is situated. This town situated in the southern border of Kannur district. Mahe(uniton territory) is only 6 k.m. far from here. This town is in Peringalam grama pnchayath. Mayyazhi river is flowing through this town. Nadapuram is only 9 k.m. from here. The imporant places near Peringathur are Thalassery, Kuthuparamba, Panoor, Chokli, Nadapuram, Mahe, Kariyad, Kadavathur, Kallachi, etc.
