Peren is the eleventh and the newest district of Nagaland, formed as a result of bifurcation of Kohima District. It is bounded by Assam state and Dimapur District in the west and north-western part respectively, Kohima District in the east and Manipur state in the south. Peren District is headquartered at Peren (about 1,445 m above sea level). Tening and Peren are the major towns of the district. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Zeliang and Kuki tribes.
