[edit] Tour details

The 2008 tour was announced by M.I.A. in April 2008 via her Myspace. The setlist is set to feature songs from both her studio albums Arular (2005) and Kala (2007), although M.I.A. does not perform the same setlist at every concert. Dates include concerts at music festivals, universities and club venues. The set consists of M.I.A., back up singer Cherry, a DJ, dancers and supporting vocalists. M.I.A. selects programming, beats and videos using a Lemur Input Device, as she did during her 2007 tour. M.I.A. has expressed interest in introducing more live instruments on stage in future concerts. A panoramic back screen features film footage of break-dancing street kids, strippers, tigers, war, video games, political rhetoric, graphs, globes, laughing women and large concert crowds from her previous shows, images of her artwork and holographic patterns. Opening acts on some of the dates included Holy Fuck, Soulja Boy and Egyptian Lover. M.I.A.’s DJs also perform opening sets before her shows.

As with her previous tours, the clothes worn during the performances of this tour are self-made, designed and selected by M.I.A. They are inspired by prints and artwork she created for her websites, her album cover for Kala and songs such as "Birdflu", and are taken from her upcoming clothing line.[1][2] The underground fashion line titled M.I.A. that she launched in 2008 focuses on the artist's personal style for which she has become known.[3][4] M.I.A.’s idiosyncratic fashion style during her career has been noted to have influenced fashion.[5][6]

M.I.A. performed additional dates during her tour. On May 3, 2008 she performed at the JazzFest in New Orleans, U.S.,[7] and at an afterparty for the MTV Movie Awards in West Hollywood, U.S. on June 1, 2008.

In May 2008, she stated in an interview "I figured I might as well do a few more shows in America before I may not be allowed back in or ever get a chance to come back again - It's nice to tour around America and do every gig like it's your last gig."[8]
