Early Days
'People Like Us' were a South-African HI-NRG band from the 1980s. Their first song 'Midnight Lover' was conceived in 1985 by producers Paul Crossley and Terry Owen. Legendary music executive Hilton Rosenthal also aided on this project and would later produce records like 'Graceland' for Paul Simon.
Deliverance
Then in 1986/1987 their second song 'Deliverance' was released. This would be the song to make then well known in the clubs of Europe where HI-NRG and Italo disco songs were still the favourite music styles pumping out of the speakers. People didn't at first know that 'People Like Us' were a South-African outfit and expected them to be from England or even Italy. The song 'Deliverance' caused quite a stir under some church leaders in post-democratic ultra conservative South-Africa when their roots were eventually made known due to the songs lyrical content of "Deliverance".Paul Crossley passed away at the height of 'Deliverance' and this had a serious effect of the future plans and progression of the band.
The Singers
At first UK born South-African Cindy Dickenson was the lyricist and performed all of the early work including the debut album. Later on Angie Gold was involved on several of following album's songs including 'Resurrection' under supervision of Terry Owen and Robin Hogarth. The song could never live up to their innitial success of 'Deliverance' and soon afterwards the group disbanded.
Where Are They Now?
Cindy Dickenson is currently living in Durban, South-Africa where her husband is the famous radio DJ Dave Guselli on East Coast Radio. She is still involved with music and does perform on a regular basis but the style of music is not the familiar thumping sounds of the discos of the 1980s
