[edit] ‘Contraversy’ (Controversy) Section

Propose removal or modification of this section.

I feel this section, as it stands, provides little relevant information for an encyclopaedia. It is true that shortly after the service started the ferry got into difficulties while attempting to berth in bad weather and the subsequent MAIB investigation found a number of procedures required attention. Since then these matters have been resolved. The full report can be seen on the MAIB web site, just ‘Google’ M.V.Claymore. Controversy concerning companies, particularly those engaged in transport is not unusual, nor are dissatisfied passengers. Justified or not I do not believe such comments belong here. At least with Pentland Ferries operating such passengers have a choice of crossing which they did not before. Since they started, freight rates on the crossing have reduced, this being reflected in the islands cost of living. Tourism has increased, with last I heard around half the passengers being carried between Pentland and John O’Groats Ferries, all down to freedom of choice. What really matters is how the people of Orkney see it; they recently voted Andrew Banks, the owner, ‘Citizen of the Year’ so some people must appreciate the service. True they are using vessels past their best, but as stated a new vessel is due next summer, again at no cost to the public.

The real Controversy surrounding Pentland Ferries is the lack of help they receive and the vast amount of both Tax and Rate payer’s money that has, and is, poured into the subsidised ‘Northlink’ service, both directly and indirectly. Pentland receive no financial assistance and little other help, at times quite the reverse. Why are they unable to use the facilities at Burwick which were paid for by the people of Orkney and would give them an improved service? One could go on but as I said an encyclopaedia is not the place.

[edit] Neutrality of this article

This article seems to be written in the wrong tone - "Described as ‘Cheap and Cheerful’ although ‘Inexpensive and Friendly’ is possibly a better description" - this could be a violation of WP:NPOV. A bit of rewriting is required to make it fit Wikipedia's guidelines. I'll start doing this, but I'd appreciate it if someone could help out. Thanks.
