Penteli, also Pendeli and Pedeli (Greek: Πεντέλη) is a community currently divided into Palaia Penteli or Old Penteli, and Nea Penteli or New Pentéli communities. It is part of Athens metropolitan area and Athens' Megalo Daktylo. One of the city halls is located next to city square. In land area, it is the largest of the three non-municipal communes (koinótita, Greek κοινότητα) in the prefecture, although it is the smallest in population. About 80% of the non-urban land consists of Penteli mountain. Its main streets are divided into two one-way streets linking to Kifissia and the other to Vrilissia and one linking north to Dionyssos and Rea one of them are named Eleftheriou Venizelou.

The area in the western and the northern portion of Nea Penteli were made up of farmlands, while today it is covered with suburban development. Much of the population live in larger homes and the population is mainly low to mid density. The forests lie to the north and to the east on the Penteli mountain, while some urban areas lie sporadically in the northern and the eastern parts. The part of Penteli lies to the north and northeast. It also features a telescope station located to the south together with the Plakentias Tower.

In the prehistoric times, inside of the mountain features bones from the mastodons, rhinoceroses, antelopes, giraffes along with giant turtles, hyenas, etc., they are no longer founded today. Penteli was known during the ancient times, it was later ruled by the Roman Empire where in 140 a water tower was constructed to supply water to the city of Athens. It was later ruled by the Byzantine Empire and the Frankish Empire's Duchy of Athens, it fell into the hands of the Ottomans and shortly the Venetians until it was reconquered by the Ottomans again in the early 17th century until the Greek War of Independence, during the war, the De Barbois Duke of Piacenza who was a French diplomat arrived in Greece to help the revolutionary leaders. Kastello tis Rododafnis was built in the 1840s.A telescope station was completed in 1936.
[edit] Wild Fires
Penteli was ravaged by a humongous forest fire in July 1995 and damaged tens of homes near the forest. It was rarely damaged in 1999 and 2001. On Thursday August 16, 2007, another forest fire damaged the properties in the area of Penteli. It started in the afternoon hours and spread quickly in its forests, one of the fires were towering over a pine tree, another blocked the view of the sky for up to 80 to 100 m, about 200 m with the smoke. A flame devoured a pine tree that turned its branches and pine needles into black and in seconds, ruined with a dark flame. Firefighters and their residents battled the blaze for hours. Hundreds of homes and properties were damages, one of the houses saw a balcony with a grill and their porch destroyed and their wooden roofs collapsed. Many of the homes are built with the forests. One of the reasons that the fire continued was that there are dry grasses that need to be cleared for replacements to prevent any future wildfires. The fire lasted into the night and was seen as far as Athens. The fire was caused by an arson like some recent fires throughout Greece.
