Pennsylvania Route 772 (PA 772) or (SR 772) is an east-west 37 mile long state highway located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is a scenic alternative to U.S. Route 30 as it roughly parallels the main highway to the north. The highway is mostly named Newport Road. The western terminus of PA 772 is at Pennsylvania Route 441 in Marietta, and its eastern terminus is at the aforementioned US 30 just west of Gap. The highway goes through the boroughs of Mount Joy, Manheim, Lititz, and the villages of Rothsville, Leola, and Intercourse.

Communities

PA 772 begins at an intersection with PA 441 in Marietta it continues into Marietta as Waterford Avenue. PA 772 contines towards the northeast as Anderson Ferry Road. In Mount Joy, PA 772 becomes New Haven Street, Manheim Street, and intersects Pennsylvania Route 230. In Rapho Township, PA 772 becomes Mount Joy Road and interchanges with Pennsylvania Route 283. PA 772 enters the boro of Manheim as High Street and in downtown Manheim, PA 772 has a concurrency with Pennsylvania Route 72. After the PA 72 concurrency, PA 772 turns towards the southeast as Fruitville Pike. In Penn Township, PA 772 leaves Fruitville Pike and becomes Temperance Hill Road.

[edit] Lititz to Gap

After many turns east of Manheim, PA 772 enters the boro of Lititz as Orange Street. In downtown Lititz, PA 772 has a concurrency with Pennsylvania Route 501. East of PA 501, PA 772 heads towards the southeast as Main Street. In Warwick Township, PA 772 becomes Rothsville Road, Main Street, and Newport Road. After crossing the Cocalico Creek, PA 772 intersects Pennsylvania Route 272. In West Earl Township, PA 772 has become a scenic route in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country Area and PA 772 interchanges with U.S. Route 222. Then PA 772 becomes State Street through an unnamed village in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. After crossing the Conestoga River, PA 772 becomes Glenbrook Road. In Upper Leacock Township, PA 772 has a concurrency with Pennsylvania Route 23. After the PA 23 concurrency, PA 772 continues towards the southeast as Newport Road. PA 772 has many turns in Leacock Township. In the village of Intercourse, PA 772 has a concurrency with Pennsylvania Route 340. PA 772 splits from PA 340 at a "Y" intersection and continues as Newport Road towards the southeast. PA 772 passes through the Amish region of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country area. In Salisbury Township near the village of Gap, PA 772 terminates (ends) at an intersection with U.S. Route 30. The Newport Road will be continued by Pennsylvania Route 41 which intersects US 30 in Gap.[2]

[edit] Future

Lancaster County commissioned a feasibility study in 2005 to determine the practicality of rerouting PA 772. The new proposed route would keep PA 772 concurrent with PA 72 in Manheim and then turn at the square in Manheim east on Doe Run Road. Doe Run Road becomes West Lincoln Avenue in Warwick Township and Lititz Borough. The proposal then takes the route south on North Broad Street concurrent with PA 501 to the square in Lititz where it turns east onto East Main Street and follows its present route.

Arguments for the rerouting include that there are a low percentage of through-traffic trucks in Lititz, that most truck traffic is either originated or terminated within the borough, that Doe Run Road presents a road in considerably better condition without need for significant improvement such as Temperance Hill Road, that local motorists already prefer the new route, and that the change will qualify the municipalities involved for extra funding from the state.[3]

As of March 25, 2008, there has not been a final decision on rerouting.
