PA 196 starts as Sterling Road at PA 611/PA 940 going north through Monroe County. The first major intersection is with PA 423 in Tobyhanna, PA.

PA 196 continues as Sterling Road into Wayne County. The next major intersection is PA 507 in Angels, PA. In Sterling, PA 196 merges with PA 191. PA 196/PA 191 then intersects with PA 590 in Hamlin, PA. In Lake Township, PA PA 196 and PA 191 split. PA 196 ends at PA 296 in Varden, PA.[2]
