[edit] Summary

Description

Pennant-winged Nightjar captured in exhausted condition near Shamvura Camp, northern Namibia, Jan 13, 2007. Revived and later released. Comparable in size to European Nightjar.

An immature bird as it lacks the tawny collar, hardly shows the wing covert spots, has poorly developed scapular markings and has rufous secondary tips rather than buffy. Otherwise resembles an adult female with remiges barred distinctly in rufous and brown. Probably male due to thin tail barring and longest P1.

Wing shape distinct in having the distal primary (P1) longest besides absence of clear emargination. Mensural data: tarsus 20.0mm, culmen 20.5mm, wing 159mm, tail 112mm and mass 48.2g (very lean). In adulthood the primaries and rectrices lack the white spots typical of Caprimulgus species. Readily confused with immatures of those species, which have similar though much finer barring.
