The United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, Incorporated was founded by James B. Thornton. In 1949, around the age of 19 or 20, Bishop Thornton surrendered his life to God. He was baptized in accordance with the Holy Scriptures by immersion in water in the name of Jesus Christ and received the Gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Bishop’s conversion occurred under the tutelage of Bishop Winfield Showell, Pastor of The First Apostolic Faith Church located at 27 South Caroline Street. There he served and studied until 1954, when the Lord led him to the Church of The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith under the pastorship of Bishop S.C. Johnson. A faithful brother, Bishop Thornton obeyed the call God placed on his life and was elevated to Minister Thornton. In 1959, the Lord once again placed a call on Bishop’s life to begin a work for Him and on August 29, 1961, The Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic was incorporated. United’s first house of worship was located at 4 Avon Road in Turners Station. Later that year, the Church relocated to 449 E. Lanvale Street. Successive moves were to 305 Robert Street in 1961 and then to Greenmount Avenue and 21st Street in the ‘60s. One day while riding to Church, Bishop noticed an empty building in the 2200 block of Park Avenue. The Lord had revealed to him that this would be the location for a new edifice to be built. Bishop Thornton, along with family, friends, church members, and contractors labored to build a beautiful mid-sized building and, in 1970, the Church moved in to its new house of worship. The Church’s name was changed in 1974 to The United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, Inc. Many souls were baptized and saved at the Park Avenue edifice, added to the Church, and coming under the care and ministry of United. The Church soon outgrew this building, resulting in several instances during annual convocations, where there was not enough room to accommodate all of United’s friends, visitors, and delegates. In latter years, Convocations were held at the Convention Center and other larger areas in order to accommodate United’s ever growing membership and to accommodate visiting delegates and friends. United remained at 2226 Park Avenue until Bishop Thornton was divinely inspired to look for larger edifice. In 1998, the Lord led Bishop Thornton to 934 Gorsuch Avenue, the former St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church. This beautiful edifice with stained glass windows and high ceilings is a historic landmark in Baltimore and is over one hundred years old. Located in the Better Waverly and Greater Homewood areas, United is bordered by the Marian House, a “mission for at risk women and their children,” the former Eastern High School Building, now owned by Johns Hopkins University; and the fairly new YWCA on 33rd Street.
